    Hi folks,

I don't do enough miles for a diesel and do numerous short hops between
Deansgrange, dun laoghaire, loughlinstown and occasionally glencullen.

Not many motorway miles at all.

Currently drive a 1.4 focus and mpg is about 30 which isn't great, and thats driving nicely.

    Have been looking at 1.8 s40 or a 320i

I know the mpg won't be brilliant but they're nice cars. If it increased 4-6mpg and was a nice car id be happy. trading spec for mpg then after that.

realistically what is the highest mpg one could achieve in a petrol car doing this sort of driving?

Not interested in the likes of a yeti/jazz idea.
I do like my nice spec...

Budget about 6500 and that includes the 06 focus

Recommended one of these just there in another thread but I reckon they would be one of the most fuel efficent 1.8 litre petrol engined cars around though I would not really believe the claimed figure in the advert:

Doesn't have the leather of the S40 but has more space and is better speced than your Focus. They are available as a hybrid too but that seems to be outside your budget.

mid size would be a 5 series, 3 series is a compact, you would pick up an E60 5 series for bout 5500 and use the extra for tax... The engine in the 318 can be problematic...

    I changed from a 1.4 focus (MkII 05) to a 1.8 s40 (pre-facelift 07) last year.

I'm getting the same, or slightly better mpg

I was getting 35ish commuting in the focus and I'm getting 35-37 on the s40, but it's not as simple as that. The focus had to be pushed hard on motorway ramps etc so it got a lot of flooring that the s40 doesn't need. The s40, while not quick, offers a lot of extra power for speeding up and I could easily ruin my mpg pushing it.

My commute is mostly M50 and N road, with some 80km/h and some town driving along the way. I see you're doing more town driving that I was, and as a result might not get the improvement in mpg you're looking for. I'd have been hard pressed to get any worse out of the focus on my commute, given it's lack of response. The only time it ever went up significantly in consumption was doing 130-140 on the motorway driving Dublin to Cork.

the 1.4 in the focus is known to be a joke... i wouldnt bother changing to save a few euro a week in fuel OP, only bother if you actually want to change car for other reasons also...

You should look to see if you can get a second gen Toyota Prius with a luxury package for that money. According to fuelly that car gets around 55 mpg in real life driving which you will find hard to beat for a petrol. A 320i is rated less than 30 mpg on fuelly for comparison.

Prius are used all over the world as taxis and last forever. Fewer parts should mean lower maintenance costs.

Not exactly the sportiest drive of course, but a practical choice I think.

Ye I know it's a joke hence the desire to change. I would prefer to get the same or slightly better mpg in a better spec'd car. The focus is very bare.

The Prius is an interesting suggestion, but I'm not sure i could put up with the abuse! I'd love a leaf if I'm honest....
The saloon civic is extremely nice and if would do 40mpg I'd be seriously impressed with it, haven't seen many though
