M4 internal upgrade.

Starting of with a standard G&P M4A1 I'm looking to upgrade some internal parts.
What I'm after is an improvement in range and accuracy and also get my fps upas close to 328 as I can.

So I'm looking for a tightbore barrel, a new hop rubber and prob a spring and I was wondering what any of you guys are using in your M4s?

Does anyone know the bore of a standard G&P barrel? I was thinking of going with a 6.02, can anyone recommend a make?

Also if you have any other suggestion to do while I'm in there let me know!
    Thanks in advance!

it's pretty odd for you to want to upgrade a G&P but anyways :)
a new hop up and tight bore barrel will both increase your energy output. If it's all ready firing in the 315-320 then you won't need a spring the hop and barrel will give you better air seal and therefore increase your velocity. as fort eh hop up and barrel to use, prob best to experiment. I use a Madbull 6.01 in oe of my guns but it needs top quality BB's. I used a green hop up rubber and guarder clear bucking.

Why odd? Do most people not usually need to with a G&P? The only reason is I have an ICS cqb as well and it outranges the G&P by a long shot! Maybe its just s lemon I have!

well G&P are usually pretty decent out of the box, either way you won't achieve much in the range department by increasing the power, hop up and barrel is what you want :)

nub, bucking, rubber..I my self have yet to figure out why there are several names for a component with only 2 note worthy parts. I get all my stuff in Hobby but it's up to yourself like where you want to go and who is the closest to you. :)

I stuck a prometheus pink rubber and madbull 6.03 TBB into the brothers G&P sentry and made a monumental change in accuracy and range. The G&P stock rubber works better with higher fps, as in higher fps than our legal limit so a softer rubber is needed. High quality bb's and using heavier bb's can help also.

common? 6.03, 6.01 if you want to go smaller diameter again. Now keeping that in mind there was a discussion here a while back where 6.08 barrels gave better range over 6.03's or something along the lines, but all the swapping of barrels I've I see a massive difference between 6.08 and 6.03 barrels so I usually take a .03 one :)

Am I right in saying that you are currently unhappy with the range you are getting on your rifle?

What I would recommend to you, if you are looking for maximum range, is the following:
    - High quality 6.03mm tight-bore barrel (you can go 6.01mm for greater consistency at shorter range)
    - IR-Hop from HS5 (R-Hop, just for colder climates...i.e. us :P)
    - M-Nub (replaces standard hop up nubs for more effective pressure on the IR-Hop)
    - Prometheus Purple hop up rubber or Madbull Blue (please note that the rubber bucking when used with an R-hop is used solely for air-seal; madbull blue is nice and thick which generally gives a superior seal, and prometheus purple is one of the best buckings)

Now that will provide excellent results, and provided you are competent, the installed R-hop will ensure that you can sling heavier ammo to much greater distances thus improving your consistency. However, if you wish you can go further and start improving things like your compression, and whilst in the gearbox you can boost your power a little more by adding things like a bearing spring guide etc...it all depends on how much you want to spend, and how much you expect in return.

But yes, there is lots that can be done!

    https://sites.google.com/site/hsarmory/home/products-and-services

There is a UK company that has them as well, ordered through Hsarmory, cant remember the site though.

Is there any advantage to changing the actual hop unit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭Inari

Yes and no. The hop up unit locks in your ajustment and allows you to fine-tune. If it is too stiff you can end up going too far and having to start again.

I personally love the Madbull 3in1 chambers because they give you the ICS/Sig/G36 wheel-style hop in an M4. You have much finer adjustment, and they don't randomly lose their adjustment.

That said you can achieve great results simply by modifying your existing chamber. You just make sure there isn't any material impeding feeding, or going to cause the hop rubber to bunch up. Then using a craft knife ensure that all cogs fit and move together perfectly without sticking - you want a good mesh, but without excess material getting in the way. Then it's onto the hop up arm to allow for more even and effective hop :)

The main thing about effective upgrades is time; you spend very little money and a rake load of time, and you will see superior results. If you dump money in for drop-in parts without spending the time to fit them correctly etc, you will not see anything impressive
