I just broke my helmet visor today by accident,(forgot I had it on while getting into a car:o), but is it ok to not have it at all, or is there any reason for it?

In Other words is the helmet now less safe? I dont see how it could be of any benefit anyway as Its only plastic clipped on with plastic dowels.Would it not just break instantly if you did hit the ground?

But I could be talking rubbish?

the helmet is still as useless as it's always been so don't worry about it.

If you're a roadie, then you were in violation of Rule #35, and clearly, the gods were looking to put that right.

If you're an MTB-er, commuter or other species, then visors are allowed, but if not present have no safety effect whatsoever, so you can relax. I used to think they were for aerodynamic effect, but apparently they are to keep the sun out of your eyes, which you can achieve with a cap and/or appropriately cool sunglasses.

    :)

    A thousand times this.

The visor is just for rain/sun glare. The helmet is just as likely to not make a measurable difference to your survival chances in the case of an accident now as it was on the day you bought it.

Do I detect an anti-helmet vibe here folks?:p Anyway I just been doing a little research;) and apparently the reason for the clip-on is to use it on/off road and to not give a shock to the riders neck if they fall.

So arnt ye glad I informed ye:D.Thanks ya all:).

If the Visor doesn't know its on road, will it still work? It might be confused because I use a MTB on the road. Maybe it thinks its on a mountain.

for a serious answer I actually took mine off after the first ride I used the helmet, it seriously reduces your line of sight up the road, esp when sitting down on the drops.

Don't believe the helmet haters! Too many people get the helmet debate confused with the compulsory helmet debate- two separate things.

The visor is useless though- only on for aesthetic reasons (or lack of them)

A visor is like the odd poster on this forum - mostly irritating without really contributing anything to your cycling ;)

I wouldn't say there's an anti-helmet bias, just an unwillingness to unfailingly accept that helmets are as effective as some would have you believe.

I leave the visor on when I'm on my roadbike.

Because it makes my cheap helmet look less massive.

During the summer cycling through a cloud of midges can have blinding side effects without a visor or glasses, polarised visors are useful in winter when the sun is low in the sky otherwise they serve no real purpose in my limited experience.

I assume he means not a visor put the plastic peak, for keeping the sun out. Which as cookie monster says is removable because you head is down further on a road bike so it would effect your line of sight. Where as on a MTB or straight barred bike you sit up and its for blocking the sun.

True, but it's great at keeping poorly-aimed headlights out of my eyes at night.
