    Hi,
My BF and I are thinking about 2 weeks in california but have no idea yet re.budget for same. We would be on a budget and keen to stay in cheap enoough places but not dingy either.

For cheap but decent accommodation, how much should be expect to budget per night?

otherwise, general budget suggestions also welcome- what is the cost of living like? Food, drink, tours, petrol, car rental ??

How does cost of living compare to Irish prices?

    Thanks.

Where in California? It's a very big state in geographical area.

When? Examples: Off-season in Palm Springs (summer is hot and cheap), while at the same time the beach cites are very expensive. Winter is less expensive for Catalina Island visits, but expensive for Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Sorry - April. I know its a big state. No definite itinary yet but looking thro this forum, getting lots of ideas - probably - san fran, napa valley, grand canyon and Vegas, Yosemite. They'd be first anyway....

What is the standard of hostels like BTW??

That would be a big trek through California down to Nevada and Arizona.

Hostels can range from around $40 a night to $100 (if not more) and it depends on where you're staying. In the cities will tend to be more expensive, for food also.

How do you both plan to travel around?

car rental. We are open to suggestions. We might get 2 .5 weeks in the country but of course don't want to over stretch ourselves. Any advice on a ...say 16-18 day trip excluding flying home, welcome!

Any ideas re.daily budget for food and drink even??

well for san francisco, you should budget at least $50 each for food and drink, less if you get breakfast in with your hotel. It's an expensive city in an expensive state. You can bring this down by not drinking with food (it really can drive prices up...glass of wine for $6 or $7)

Bars have happy hours, take advantage of cheap food and drinks (usually tacos or wings or something and 2 or 3 dollar beers) and in bars always go domestic (there is a great microbrewery culture here) over import.
Petrol ranges from 3.50 to 4 a gallon, pretty expensive but still cheaper than Ireland (gallon is 3 liters).
Activities are pretty expensive - antique cable cars are $7 a ride, alcatraz is $25 a person.

In SF, stay away from Fishermans wharf and explore the other parts of town, especially for food.
