Anyone got any recommendations on what to buy?

Are they any good? How long can you record for?

I've had a few near misses recently, due to bad drivers, so I'm thinking from a safety point of view, it might be a good investment.

GoPro are good. Recording time depends on battery life and video quality.

Gopro certainly appears to have the best picture and is the most popular brand, so easier to get spare parts and different mounts and whatnot.

However, I'm personally more tempted by the Contour Roam HD. It's much cheaper, looks WAY better on your helmet than a Gopro, and the pictures from it looks very good to me. Not quite as good as a GoPro Hero, but the Contour is the one I'd personally go for.

It's really all about how much you're willing to pay. The GoPros are great, but expensive.

This guy does a great job of reviewing cameras from several different price points:

After watching loads of his reviews, I settled on the 120 degree ACT20. It's not perfect, but it's pretty decent for the price. Three hour battery life too.

There are a shed load of different ones out there, if its only for the bike there are loads of cheap options and a Contour Roam would be cheaper but at the high end of cheap.

These guys sell a load of different makes and models:

    Not cheap at €400.
If you have the money this is the dogs you know what.

Why don't you start out with a very cheap one -

and when you get used to using that, you can see about upgrading?

If you're sure you'll want a better one...Wouldn't that be a waste of 20+ euro?

Wouldn't say so - I've often worked that way with new technologies - get a cheap-and-nasty version first, and that helps me to make a more informed decision later, because I really know what to look for.

i've got a contour and think it's fantastic...bought it for the same reason as you but also use it for skiing (and skidooing actually). it does suffer a little compared to the go pro when it comes to mount options but i've now got a vented helmet, handlebar, curved helmet & goggle mount for mine.
and it does look much better sitting on top of your head on a commute!

I use a DRIFT HD170 on my motorbike, but might be a bit big for a bicycle helmet...

Good quality though, and not too expensive
