Back in August I emailed UTV asking if they had any plans to launch on Saorview/Sky and this was the response I got..
We would very much like to be available on Sky in Ireland and Saorview, but unfortunately, due to programme copyright issues we are currently prevented from being carried on these platforms.

This obviously means they want to launch but TV3 are preventing them from doing so, I still don't understand how TV3 let UPC away with carrying the channels and not sky. UTV should just launch without TV3's agreement, if its available to UPC customers it should be on sky as well, especially as the channel is FTA anyway.

I think the problem is that on cable, UTV has been there LONG before TV3 was a notion, let alone existed.

So UTV is on cable for historic reasons or whatever. ICDG would be more savvy on this.

Cancel your Sky sub and UTV works fine :)

it could even just be chineese whispers about saorview approved combo boxes which would combine UTV and RTE in the same EPG ?

Either way I can never ever see UTV being on the same epg as TV3 unless UTV were to buy tv3 and say just merge the 2 under the UTV name (with different regional programming north and south of the border to keep the authorities happy)

It has been on cable since the beginning of (cable) time, though in some areas HTV would have been carried either instead of or (before Channel 4 came along) in addition to UTV. I don't think there is any UPC area still carrying ITV Wales but I could be wrong on that, some Wicklow and Wexford towns were still doing so on analogue into the early 2000s.

Whatever the historical reasons, it is legitimately carried and there is a deal in place. Its also worth nothing that while UPC also carry the other ITV channels (under a separate deal with ITV plc), they are subject to restrictions regarding sporting content that UTV is not. (This leads to ridiculous situations where ITV's rugby coverage is blocked on ITV4, but the exact same programme is not blocked when repeated on UTV).

Not sure of the numbers now, but not so far back UTV was getting 30% of it's advertising revenue from ROI

From my understanding, UTV could go on the ROI Sky EPG in the morning if they wanted to, BUT, the problem is, apparently TV3 have an exclusive arrangement with ITV that when they buy programmes from ITV, part of the deal is that exclusive satellite EPG rights come with each programme they buy. I know UTV are fta, but EPG's are not. So if UTV went on the ROI EPG, probably more than half of the programmes would have to have the dreaded " This Programme is not available" message, each day and especially at weekends, when TV3 is almost a simulcast of ITV1.

interesting bit about the EPG rights. I did know about the tv3 issue but didnt realise the reason was that they had EPG rights as well.
