Claiming off your car insurance company?

I'm not sure if this is in the correct place but here it goes...

My car broke down in a few months back. My roadside assist (with my insurance policy) had to be called. I was towed to the nearest town but had to stay over night as my car couldn't be repaired until the following day (B&B was arranged by the garage I was towed to). I got a receipt for the B&B in question. I sent it to my insurance company who then rang me to say they can't accept that receipt and need something more detailed eg letterhead etc. I have wrote to the B&B and they have ignored me. What do I do next? I really need to claim back the money as things are tight. I suspect the B&B don't pay tax as there was no sigh outside etc. I have the owners full name and address. These were not on the receipt.

Best people to talk to about this are your insurance company. Only they can tell you with absolute certainty how to proceed to their satisfaction.

As I have already talked to the insurance company about it I rang the National Consumer Agency who advised me to make a complaint. They have 10 working days to respond or I can make a official complaint. Thanks

    That escalated pretty quickly.

But I tried to talk to the company in question and they were not help at all. You seem to be ignoring that. I really need MY money back. They are not entitled to refuse my refund.

They haven't refused it, they've asked for a more official looking receipt (that's how I am reading it anyway)
I would have thought they were within their rights to do that.

Sorry if I was not clear but they HAVE refused to accept the receipt I submitted. I explained the the B&B had nothing else to offer me (I asked at the time). The B&B don't tend to have letterheads etc as it's a unnecessary cost for them. I pay hundreds for my car insurance and am perfectly entitled to this refund.

Who did you complain about; the B&B or the insurance company? Your insurers are well within their rights to ask for a proper reciept; how else are they to know that you arent just trying to rip them off?

You need to find a way to get in contact with the B&B and try and get something more official from them. Ask your insurer what exactly they will accpet to be an official receipt.

I suspect they are just attempting to avoid any fraudulent claims to be honest.
Your issue is probably more with the B and B than the insurance company.

They know because the road side assist arranged the B&B for me. It's not just me claiming this. They have said a letterhead but a letterhead is not a receipt! What I sent in was a receipt but obviously not one form a cash register as it's was a small B&B not a shop.

I suspect the B&B are dodging tax. Very unfair on those of us who are honest tax payers!

Maybe contact the roadside assist company; if they arranged the B&B for you then they should have experience of dealing with the insurance companies afterwards.

If you do want to make a compaint/enquiry regading the behavior of the insurance company then you would probably be better off contacting the financial ombudsman rather than the national consumer agency.

The NCA say that you should email the company first, if you get nowhere make an official complaint to them and if you still get nowhere make a complaint to the financial ombudsman. NCA give good advice I think. I've contacted them in the past.

You have your steps to follow then. If the NCA have said that they are the steps that need to be taken in order to issue an official complaint then you will have to follow them.

That is exactly what I'm doing. I created the thread before ringing them.
