Is your middle name on the student card?

I've been told by the university that I have to have my middle name on my student card and eventually my degree. They have said there is no way they will take my middle name off their records because it is on my birth cert. They said there is no student in the college that uses another name than what is on their birth cert and that every student in the college uses there middle name if they have one. I find that extremely hard to believe.

There is no way I could accept a degree with my middle name on it, I really rather not have the degree at all. So I don't know what to do now to be honest. Dropping out is a possible option because there is no way I ever want to see anything with that name on it.

Mine doesn't have my middle name, while my old DCU student card did

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    Hi OP,

What is the problem with the middle name? You would consider dropping out of college over it!

Meet Registrar's office during summer / after results and tell them.

The only people in my year (3rd) that have their middle name on the card is where there is more then one person with the same first name and surname in their lectures.

Mines the opposite, they changed it from my CAO application. The CAO don't know my middle name nor do SUSI.

Its getting awkward for some things cause my email is different from what my name shows up as cause the emails were made before registration. Maths dept think I have one name and CS dept think its another.

It's my dads name, I can't stand it, I've lots of reasons not to use it. I've already changed my last name I just never thought my middle name would be a problem.

As far as I'm concerned a degree that has my middle name on it is completely useless to me.

The desk to the left of fees and grants told me whatever name I do my exams as will be on my degree.

Just shows that they are lying when they say every student uses the full name that is on their birth cert.

Nobody could have the same second name as me because I made mine up.

Send an email to someone else, explaining the circumstances - they might think you're just being stubborn or something. If you say you're that bothered by it that you might drop out then they might take it a bit more seriously. Also, Rose in Academic Advisory might be a good person to talk to!

I've already emailed Fiach, the access office and a few other offices this morning.

My student card has my middle name on it and so do sign in sheets for tutorials etc. I've even had lecturers e-mail me with 'Dear Novella-Middle name' as if it's all my first name. I always wondered how it ended up like that.

Apparently theres there's no such thing as a middle name, its just a made up term and its actually all your first name or forename or whatever you call it.

I thought registering you could use either a birth cert or passport. Since a passport doesn't require your middle name even if it's on the birth cert, why should the registration? In any case, I have a vague memory of someone (not management) from the registration office claiming these things could be changed.

Basically, it's an entry in a database. If they're unwilling to change it, then it's pure laziness, in my opinion. They don't want the fuss or the paperwork. So keep annoying them, I say. The more hassle the better. Then maybe next time they'll change it when asked in the first place. There's no good reason not to allow it be changed.

... organise a mass protest in the form of 200 students all arriving to their office at the same time with the same request: Remove my middle name please. That would annoy them quite a bit I'd say. Do it once a week, half an hour before their office closes and they'll get real tired of it real quick.

I don't have a passport nor could I afford one, I might get one when the HEAR money comes through though. Its a waste of money students just dont have, I have no need for a passport there's no chance I'll be leaving Ireland before I finish college.

Where can I find 200 people? Im putting in a formal complaint against the staff in that office based on descrimination either way. I basically think that they look down on people who are getting a grant.

The staff in that office were absolutely horrible to me when I needed forms stamped for social welfare payments. I think they should be writing apologies to anyone that didn't get their student card on day one because of the grant. Overall I've found the staff in the college to be fairly nasty people.

My middle name is on my student card and on tutorial lists but I have noticed thats not the case for everybody.. strange.

As regards the staff at nuim, I usually have no problem but last week I went to the fees & grants office having being told by the susi that Id get back what fees I paid so far. However when I went there, the woman was particulary snotty and very matter of factly told me she'll let me know when the susi has paid them . How was I to know? Right after that I had to go to the students records desk right beside that on the left & the woman was absolutely lovely, couldnt have been nicer.

There's all kinds of people in life.

For what it's worth, I just checked and my birth cert has my middle name on it.
    My NUIM ID does not.

    Whoever said this is lying:

As for the passport, I wasn't suggesting you go get one, it's clearly too late as you've already registered. No matter. I understand you not wanting your middle name on the thing, a friend of mine was disgusted this summer to receive his degree parchment complete with a middle name he hates. It spoils it for the person. I think you're totally within your rights to demand it be removed.

I used my passport to register (which didn't have my middle name on it) so I never had a middle name on my student card/degree. I think academic advisory or the access office would help you get it changed if you explain the situation to them, especially seeing as it's making you uncomfortable enough to want to leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,604 ✭✭✭xOxSinéadxOx

Mine doesn't have my middle name and all my friend's does though not sure why. I never bother putting my middle name when filling out forms so that's probably why, although I'm sure it's on my birthcert.

I have mine on all the uni stuff and I don't really care, even though I never use
it in normal life, unless someone asks. It's on both my degrees anyway.

Don't see how it would hinder anyone academically, maybe psychologically.

Seems a bit irrational to hate a name that much that you'd consider dropping out.
It's not like everyone is going to be calling you by it anyway.

Have you had any luck yet sorting it Garret? Hope it all works out for you! In all fairness, I can't see why NUIM are making a big deal out of changing it, is it not simply a thing of pressing delete of that name on a computer?

Nope, they insist they they can only ever use the name on your passport or birth cert and that there's no students that have anything else.

Fiach and the Access office have completely ignored me.

I'm gonna try to bring some people down later on in the week who have their middle name on both their birth cert and passport but not on anything for college.

That's terrible. I gave in my Birth Cert at Registration because my passport was out of date, I think it may have had my first name on it tbh. But still, when it effects someone so much they could at least attempt to accommodate you. I'm sure you've explained your situation to them and everything like?

Is your middle name Syphilis or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

They have changed names as printed on student cards etc before in special circumstances. I know this for a fact.

Ask to meet with either Ann or Maureen from Student Records (where you registered and got your orange sheet), or just up the hall you can ask Joan, Secretary to the Registrar, for a short meeting with the Registrar (David Redmond) to explain.

They're all really busy this time of year reviewing the exam timetable etc (the amount of work that goes into this is unreal, if you want to see the blood drain from someone's face go in and say your timetable has an error) so things will move slowly, but they should accommodate you.

Yeah, "There's rules that they have to follow" (for a randomly selected group of people).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,671 ✭✭✭GarIT

It will be fine tho, I've been convinced not to be bothered about it cause I'll get it sorted. Even if they stick to these supposed rules I'll just get a passport without the middle name.

One person in there told me I only need it sorted by the final exams rather than any exams like the other person said. So its not as urgent as having to get it done by the last day before christmas.

I've started signing everything by writing this is my student number but not my name. Just to make a point cause I'm moody.

You will, it'll get sorted soon! Don't let it annoy you too much! I'm sure when the Advisory office or whoever have their exam shíte out of the way they'll sort it out!
