Car won't budge after a hitting a rock...

...was going up a crap road half way up a mountain and managed to strike a rocky/muddy ball of crap. Good enough rap, cracked front-right hand side of bumper underneath, and some damage to grill underneath, but though I'd be able to thump it back into place. Car is a 04 Saab and sporting a few scratches so not that bothered about it. Only thing is that when I turned it on this morning it made a worrying noise and the engine and oil light flashed on. So worried I might have cracked something - although engine seems pretty intact and frankly assumed the damage was only to the body. Anyone know what might be at the very front/right hand side of a Saab underneath that might be damaged in a pretty low speed tip?

Check oil level? You hardly would have cracked the sump?

Did you crack the sump? Does the car have oil in it?

Thanks, at work now so will check later. Did check the dipstick and that had some oil on it but will check it more thoroughly later, I guess that may have been residue clinging to it and was racing out the door for work.

If it is a cracked or broken sump, is that a big problem?

.... Combined with flashing oil light and a non start it would mean engine is scrap realistically.

Ouch. Was really hoping I wouldn't hear those words.

Would that be over 500? Over 1k? I have comp insurance at least.

    Would insurance cover that?

They don't normally cover mechanical failure bit this is due to a collision so maybe

Go get the car checked out asap. Anything else here is just speculation. Insurance might be difficult as it sounds like you were on a backroad, I dunno if it was even a public one and you'll loose your no claims even if you were successful. Personally don't like the sound of it, but get it checked.

Drivers side of the car is the front end of the engine with the crank pulley and aux drive belt.

...depends on whether you're the owner of the car, or Hammond Lane, tbh......

    Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew.

    Checked oil, still there.

Brought a crash repair guy up to have a look at it, no problem with oil or water at all, engine fine though he said may be a problem with spark plugs so failure to start was just a bad coincidence. Checked insurance and have no claims protection but excess of €300, which the crash repair guy said might be the cost of a new bumper job, maybe slightly more. So not sure I'll put it through at all. But at least spared the horror of new engine, which for a car like that of little value might be a bridge too far. So thinking of getting one or two other jobs, new badge and stuff, and treating it with a bit more tlc.

But thanks for all the help and pointers anyway.

Unless you are talking a significant sum in repairs (into the thousands) then avoid claiming off the insurance at all costs. It will cost you more in the long run. If you do need to get repairs and cannot afford them then look at getting a credit union loan; it will be cheaper overall than going through insurance.

Thanks. Yeah, was kinda thinking that myself. But on the other hand, with no claims protection my broker was telling me that I shouldn't worry about it as my insurance record stays "clean".

Your record wont stay clean. You will still have a claim listed against you which will reduce your ability to change insurers, your protected NCB will most likely only remain protected provided you remain with your current insurer and even though your NCB will remain intact with your current insurer there is nothing to say that they wont raise your base premium at renewal and you could still end up paying more.

Was thinking about this alright. One or two others insisted that NCB means NCB but I was pointing out that the claim would still have to be on the record so that would affect future premiums even if they allege that it doesn't.

If it is no spark you may have a faulty DIC, there is a second hand one for sale on donedeal at the moment, as they are expensive enough new, anywhere from 250 euro to 400 euro.

    DIC

Sorry, very ignorant when it comes to cars, what is this?

The starter hasn't been great for a while, twice it hasn't started at all. Just that when the oil light came on after last weekends bump, thought it was as a result of it. So could well believe that it might not be plugs, though then again after last service it was fine again for a while.

DIC ,direct ignition cassette, saab's coil pack, it sits on top of the engine. You might want to get yourself some diagnostics kit, op-com can be bought on e-bay .It can read any errors that the car has detected . Including ignition errors.

The girlfriend had a claim for 2500 last year with no claims protection and her quote surprisingly went down.
