Cheap Jeep for Wet Weather (Minor Floods)

    Right have a slight problem.

The road outside our new house seems to flood when there's heavy rain (I.e now)

Been thinking a solution would be a cheap jeep with better ground clearance than my 407 coupe and my wife's 406 coupe (both approx 110mm ground clearance)

Was thinking about a pajero junior 1.1 (200mm clearance) ... cheap to tax as will only be an emergency car for us. Any thoughts on them or alternative suggestions? Must be cheap to buy, run and be reliable (don't want much eh!)

Water is not ridiculously high but want to be able to get out when needed

    Thanks

Wow that's really helpful. Thank you so much for your insight.

If you cared to read my original post properly you would see the"new house" comment. First food was last Monday morning as I was trying to get to work. But yeah I should have bought one months ago in the dry (our less wet) when I didn't know it was gonna happen.

Anyone got any helpful advice rather than criticism.

Suzuki jimny? Honda Crv, both can be got for small enough money, the jimny has a small engine.
CRV doesn't but I'd say would be a better buy!

Dont think a 1 litre freelander would be great in any conditions..

    1998cc maybe?

*Do what I did, buy a 3 litre hilux, about 300mm min clearance, hit a 9 inch flood of water flat out this morning and it didnt even slow me down, frightened the shyte outta me, but no ill effects

You could buy a c5, press the button, up she goes.
Mine was a godsend in the bad floods we had a couple of years back.

Or you could go to the local council who will investigate and "hopefully" fix the route cause of the flooding. We used to have a river flowing past our house and the council fixed it after we called.

Buy an old Landcruiser or Discovery. Commercial It up.

    Tax for the year.

Much better 4x4 and can wade through deeper water than anything mentioned on this thread.

My sister has a pajero junior 1.1.They are very cramped. They are quite capable off road and have decent clearance but only really viable as something for short journeys.

While I'd completely agree the OP asked about small jeeps in fairness,
I'd never recommend those jeeps for real off roading!

For me, they would be the first to come to mind for cheap/occasional use. First generation CRVs are pretty reliable (ie once it's been checked over by a mechanic and deemed "good" it shouldn't give major expense) and very cheap. The reason for being so cheap - 2L petrol tax and fuel costs.

Other alternatives - Honda HRV (1.6 petrol, not as cheap to buy as the CRV), or I know someone who was looking for a cheap 4wd to use for hunting and picked up a Daihatsu Terios.

I'm just stating that since we're very close to winter now and it was heavy rain and flooding and freezing temperatures this week that the prices have suddenly gone up on all these.

but yes the crv is very good, i got through a few lightly flooded roads last night where cars couldnt.

crv is great if you make sure you get an actual 4WD one and not 2WD , only way of checking this is looking under the jeep to see the drive shaft and rear diff.

I got a good laugh at you making a comment like that when you have literally just bought one:D

So do what you did and buy one two weeks ago?

Come on now, you weren't exactly "ahead of the curve" either... ;)

    that's the joke :)

tbh if I did know I was gong to end up with one I would've got it a lot earlier in the year....

I was told by a taxi driver before its like buying a camper.... buy it in the winter when nobody wants or needs them type thing

I understand the OP only asked for small 4x4s but I imagine this is because of the fear Irish people have of anything with a slightly big engine, therefore it's to cost the whole of the earth to run, tax and insure. Green Propaganda

The commercial would be one be the cheapest taxed )330 ish I think. The cheapest insured and finally because it will only be used now and again quite cheap to run.

What is the situation with Joe PAYE taxing/insuring a commercial as a personal, "social, domestic and pleasure" use vehicle ?

I'd be willing to jump through certain hoops myself but from the many and varied answers on the legitimacy of the whole thing, I be worried about some Catch22 where my insurance wouldn't be valid and I couldn't tax the thing?

Hmmm... I currently run a 2.0 (pre-emissions tax) and my wife has my old 2.2 (pre-emissions tax) so I think I have handed over enough tax (€1,500) per year to not want to fork out more. AFAIK you can't legally drive a commercial anymore without proof of it being a commercial. If I could buy an old commercial jeep and easily tax and insure it then I would definitely go down that route. Don't want to run into legalities hassle though.

Cheers for all the replies though

Just register on the commercial tax declaration form as a sole trader using your pps. I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty in your situation. Or buy a jimny or mini pajero 700cc.

Your right about the commerical tax. Some areas are gone very strict on it. In Kilkenny they are strict enough. My mother taxed are company van and she was asked for a vat number and she had to say that it would only be used for commerical use. Some places aren't as strict and there is people getting away with using jeeps privately and taxing them commerical but that is coming to an end quickly. People will tell you on here that you can but at the end of the it is illegal and everyone will get caught eventually. Op best thing to do is just try and buy a small engined jeep this way you will have no hassle.
