Has anyone else here heard of the Lollards?

The Lollards were a pre-Reformation group of religious dissenters in England. The Lollard movement started in the hallowed halls of Oxford, England in the 1370s and soon spread to many parts of England in the 1380s and 1390s.

The academic scholar John Wycliff, who was educated and taught in Oxford University, is believed to have been the founder of the Lollard movement. Wycliff and some of his followers criticised the established Roman Catholic church as out of touch, arrogant, corrupt and unwilling to preach in the common language of the common man, English.

Lollards believed the word of God came direct from the Bible and that all people should have access to its teachings, not just the clergy. In a sense, Lollards were Protestants before such a term existed.

Unfortunately for the Lollards, they drew the wrath of the established church who saw them as a threat to be purged, and they were persecuted with many Lollard figures burned at the stake for "heresy." The movement largely died out by the 1420s.

It's interesting to think, though, that if the Lollard movement has succeeded, the Reformation might have started in England in circa 1372 as opposed to Germany in 1517.

Apparently they were called lollards by their enemies but took ownership of the term themselves.

Lollards seem to have been airbrushed from history.

I doubt it. The airbrush wasn't invented until 1876.
