Hi, I'm buying a relatives car from NI. Will be bringing it for a VRT inspection next week.
How does the DVLNI know that the car has been exported? Should I send off the export part on the reg doc to DVLNI and give VRT the remainder of the doc or does VRT inform the DVLNI?

    Thanks

Basically yes, this is explained on the V5C Doc. Send off the export stub, not the whole document. VRT and DVLNI have no connection, DVLNI just declare it exported it.

You can read the list of documents you are required to bring to the VRT (NCT) office on Revenues and NCTS's site.

Actually Matt, there's no need to bother sending off the V5C. AFAIK the previous owner should write a letter to DVLNI explaining the car has been exported.

    or do nothing......

the owner of the car only fills out the export slip of their V5C is they are personally exporting the car.

Op, to answer you original post, you need to clear a car.....

    The cars V5C
    The Cars MOT
    The Car itself
An invoice from the seller for the car
    ID
proof of residence (utility bill etc)
    the fee

But then they would be done for UK tax and any fines the new Irish owner gets?! Not just in the UK, but here too, the previous owner of my Merc got M50 toll fines!

I don't see a diff in personally doing it as a sale, the need to have it marked as exported: https://www.gov.uk/taking-vehicles-out-of-uk

Hmm ok. I think I will send off the export slip to DVLNI just to be safe. Don't trust VRT. One of the docs they say I need is the CO2 emissions. This should be on the V5? Will bank statement work for proof of residence?

Safe? .....safe from what? It is not your obligation to do so, and the seller should'nt do it either unless they are peronally excporting the car to another country themselves. The best course of action is if the seller writes to them in Coleraine and notifies them that way, but again, its not necessary.

Co2 figure will be on the V5C document.

and yes, bank statement is ok, but one within the last 3 months.

No need to, write one yourself, (see sign in VRT office).
