No tax on new car, quickest way to tax?

My wife bought a car on Friday night and was given the ownership documents to send off. So is there any chance I can use the old ownership doucment to tax the car or does it have to be sent off and recorded before we tax it? Car has an NCT but tax is 3 months out of date and I don't want to be paying for the 3 moths.

My wife won't drive a car that doesn't have money on the windscreen so the car will be parked up untill thats sorted, which isn't that stupid as the local car parks she uses are patrolled by traffic wardens that spend most of their time looking for vehicles that aren't taxed.

I'm guessing we'll just have to wait till the change of ownership comes through but I had this funny idea (probably wrong) I might be able to get it all sorted in the Concil Offices on Monday?

You will have to wait until change of ownership is processed.

Usually you can sign the ownership papers and tax it on the spot in the tax office and they'll send it off for you

Go into council office with all docs, insurance and nct. They will send off the reg doc and tax it there and then monday morning.

Well, at least thats how Clonmel do it.

Just explained that to my wife so now shes thinking that there's no panic and she'll wait till next Monday

So what happens if you go in on the last day of the month which this month is Friday? Do you get taxed from from the following month or the begining of the current month?

Still get taxed from the beginning of this month, even if you tax it on 30th.

Pity we dont have the system they use in New Zealand.i.e. instant ownership transfer.

I bought a car while travelling there in 2004. Myself and the seller went to the nearest Post Office (on a Saturday morning) showed ID (the seller handed in ownership document), and 5 minutes later (plus a small fee) I was given an ownership reciept with the vehicle now registered in my name (a new ownership doc in my name was subsequently posted out to me). Simples! :D
