How does property co-ownership affect state benefits

If a couple co-own a home and one of them becomes unemployed, does that person have significantly reduced entitlements (as with co-habiting couples?).

Or would you actually lose out on potential benefits by not including the second person on the mortgage/home?

The family home is always disregarded in SW means test.

    I don't fully understand, so I'll elaborate a little...

We haven't bought yet, but we are buying shortly.
I can afford repayments by myself, it doesn't need to be a joint mortgage.
I'd like to name her on the mortgage because I feel it will give her more security.

But her work is seasonal and I'm concerned that we'll shoot ourselves in the foot by naming her as a joint applicant, as she won't be entitled to help from FAS if she is on temporary lay off (this has happened when we stupidly admitted we were co-habiting in the past)

Are you saying that her being a joint applicant will not affect her entitlements to JSA/Fas if she becomes temporarily unemployed (extremely probable) again ?

    Thanks for your help

If the two of you are living in the house as a couple the dept will not take the value of the property into account. If you are trying to claim social welfare in a fraudulent manner ie failure to disclose that you are co-habiting, this is not the forum for you.

Claiming you are not cohabiting when you are is fraud. And very foolish.

Cohabiting should not affect her eligibility for FAS, I presume when she is laid off seasonally she can claim JSB, which is not means tested. If she has not the stamps, she can still claim JSA, albeit a reduced amount, or sign for credits which gives her Eligibility for FAS and other programmes.

You have been misinformed, and you should not base such a huge decision such as home ownership on this.
