Humming noise from VW Golf MK 4

I have a 2000 Golf MK 4 (1.4 Petrol) which is showing up a weird one. When I am turning left whilst accelerating, usually in third gear at around 40-60km/h, there is this humming/vibrating noise. It's much more pronounced when I'm going uphill.

It doesn't really happen any other time. It sounds like it's underneath or on the left side of the car.

I've had the back box replaced in the last four months, it has passed its NCT and a fella in Advance Pitstop tells me there's no issue with the exhaust system. He did mention that he though the fuel pump was slightly loud as it was up on the hoist, but said he didn't know if that was normal.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me.

More than likely the wheel bearing, happened on mine and really noticed the sound when I was driving at motorway speeds.

Have a look under the wheel arches and make everything around the wheel is intact and where it should be too.

I stumbled across this thread in my favourites folder and had forgotten to update it, as it might help someone else down the line.

Basically the problem ended up being that one morning the back box in the exhaust went and I had a drive to Cork ahead of me, so I foolishly let Advance Pitstop replace it as they could do it at short notice. Long story short, the box they installed was two inches too long and was forcing the exhaust over to the side so that it was vibrating against the body of the car. So my mechanic disconnected the new back box, cut two inches off the pipe and popped it back on. Since then no HHhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmss or mmmmmmMMMMMMMMmmmms of any kind.

Serves me right for going to AP, tbf.
