    Hi all

We are moving to Oldtown soon, and wondered if Broadband is available?

Also, can you get broadband once you have a phone line, or do you need a specific type of phone line?

    Thanks in advance,

    Emer.

    p.s. keeping my fingers crossed

The Oldtown exchange in Dublin has NO DSL EQUIPMENT INSTALLED.

Does that mean it's not available in any form?

It was available in parts from the legendarily awful Ice Broadband but I lost track since. Consider Oldtown a veritable third world of Broadband and it is in County Dublin, yes.

There is great confusion over this. Most of the area immediately surrounding Oldtown is covered also by the Ballyboughal exchange. It's enabled but distance issues mean max speeds would be 1 or 2 mbps.

I cannot work out what's going on there as I checked a number in an estate in oldtown which came up as "ballyboughal" while a line a little further up was on the "oldtown" exchange. Very confusing.

Basically.... Order a phone and broadband bundle off eircom. When the linesman comes out, he'll tell you what exchange will supply you. Perhaps it will be easy to arrange for a line from Ballyboughal.

Even more confusingly eircom said they would upgrade Oldtown in March 2007. It turns out they meant Oldtown in Kilkenny and they abandoned their upgrade plan over a year ago with 15 exchanges still remaining.

Almost 6 years later Oldtown has no ADSL installed. I assume you would have to wait just as long in Oldtown county Dublin.

perhaps when i get the phone number for the house, it will be easier to figure it out. we are renting, so waiting to get the number.

is satellite broadband or mifi or something a good solution if not?

I'm not sure what getting a number has to do with anything. You don't want to have a phone line only to have to pay bills and then disconnect it again. Best thing is to get an eircom linesman to visit the house, e.g. by taking advantage of the free new landline install offer and order a broadband/phone offer. He'll tell you immediately if you will be able to get broadband off it right now.

I just assumed you needed one - sorry. I don't have a clue.

TBC, any chance you could check which exchange the house I'm moving to is on if I give you the address?

You go out and plug in a phone and dial 199000, it speaks back a number if not totally disconnected.

If the number spoken back is 018959xxx then it is connected to the Oldtown exchange and there is no broadband, if different it is a long line off Ballyboughal and you may get 1-2mbits. Note the number and enter it into a line checker like the one here > www.homevision.ie

Oh, and Welcome to rural Ireland.

    From 1996

    BSB/189/06 BROADBAND NETWORK

    Question : CouncillorM. Kennedy
“Toask the Manager what plans he has to facilitate a broadband network in Oldtown,Naul, Garristown, Ballyboughal, and Rolestown”

    Reply:

"Fingal County Council have no proposals atpresent to provide Broadband to the Oldtown, Naul, Garristown, Ballyboughal andRolestown Areas. To date, the towns in Fingal have been selected by theDepartment of Communications and Natural resources and 90% funding was providedfor the towns of Donabate, Portrane, Lusk and Skerries. A Group Schemeprogramme is available through the Department of Communications and NaturalResources. Residents in an area can join together with a service provider tomake an application to the DCMNR for funding under this scheme.

And seven years on the only changes have been toall the other areas mentioned they now have broadband with the one exception Oldtown.Eircom tell us they have no plans in the future to upgrade the Oldtown exchangefor broadband.

    Herewhat Oldtown has to offer.
    NoBroadband.
Verypoor mobile signal in most places,
    Oneshop (selling basics)
    OnePub (no food on sale)
    Nopublic transport

Avery good school St Marys NS which is struggling to keep going due to cuts intheir budget.
(theschool has meteor broadband I think, and their signal is also terrible)

If you do a lot of downloading or work from home, or a gourmet chef needing a good supplier close at hand, have children which need to be entertained, and assured that the school that they attend will be there in the years to come, enjoy a beer with good pub food, or need public transport perhaps Oldtown is not the best choice.

    now you tell me.

ah well, good thing I have a car and prefer to cook in my house and drink in the pub

I hear on the grapevine that Oldtown is being fast tracked for b/band asap Very early in 2013 - been given top priority from what I hear, more than that I cannot say.

You mean Oldtown in KILKENNY which is where Phil Hogan is from..... sure they were promised ADSL in April 2007 ...whaddaya mean fasttracked??? :D

Any other exchanges on this fasttrack list , eg Calverstown or Kilrickle or Bruff...which are equally outstanding as long???

Nope Oldtown co'dublin , and it will be up and running ASAP in the new year.
I don't know if it will be adsl or fibre , but I would imagine the latter , more than that I just do not know , so it is good news for the people of oldtown.

Any other exchanges on that mysterious 'urgent' list 10belowzero?? A VDSL cabinet would serve Oldtown all right, it being so small.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 252 ✭✭10belowzero

Nope , there's no list , I'm assuming it's being done because a lot of work has been done in that general area all year , it will give people there , esp around the village an excellent service , I just don't know more than that.

    Hi All

Resurrecting this topic. Can anyone advise what the broadband quality is like in Oldtown now (and who are the best providers)? Has it improved from the earlier posts? My main concern would is it strong enough to be able to work from home etc?

    Thanks in advance

There's 210 homes with access to 1000Mb FTTH. This map shows which homes are connected: https://fibrerollout.ie/rollout-map/

It is excellent. As mentioned above up to 1Gb is available in the village and some of the surrounding area. It's best to use one of the Eircode checkers to be 100% certain with any house. You can find the Eircode for any property at https://finder.eircode.ie/ and then enter that into any of the broadband retailers (who resell the Openeir product). Can't comment on who is the best retailer. I've been happy enough with Eir so far.
