Skoda Octavia 2 steering rack

    Hi All,
An NCT fail meant I had to have both inner and the nearside track rod ends replaced. After the work was done the car doesn't handle like it did previous to the repair.
It's hard to explain, but here goes..... When banking to the left, at 5 degrees, at 60km on a good road, the steering trieds to intermittantly pull to 12 oclock. When the car is stationary, you can also deel a non uniform resistance on the steering.
I brought it to Phoenix Motors on Prussia st as they are used to these kind of cars and they say, with the car on the ramp, wheels off the ground, engine off, it's hard to turn/steer the wheels, it takes a lot of pressure to steer the wheel by forcing the tyre.
It seems like the steering rack is not working properly.
My question is this, is it easy to damage the steering rack while doing the track rod ends?
Is it a coincidence it failed at the same time the repair was done?

That's totally normal for that type of car. It's not an indication of a problem it is just the way they are so if that is the basis for deciding the rack is faulty then I would say don't go replacing it just yet.

Have the garage who replaced the tie rods/ends corrcetly aligned the wheels after fitting? Often the old 'count the number of turns when removing the rod' method doesn't work because it doesn't take into account the play in the worn rods and manufacturer build differences. As a rule whenever any steering/suspension component is changed a wheel alignment to manufacturer spec should be performed.

    Thanks guys for you posts.
George, the guys at Phoenix originally compared the resistance to a good car and it was very different, but since my initial post Phoenix have had the rack out of the car. The mechanic said it felt like the motor was ceased.
Waterson, the tracking was the initial suspect. I had that done in a separate garage after the repair. I went back to them and they insisted their gear was calibrated and re-checked it.
Aiden@Blakes Cross took it for a test drive. He didn't think it was tracking.
The original mechanic insisted tracking was the problem, so he brought it to yet another place for 4 wheel tracking, and the measurements before and after aren't that different and the problem still exists.
