Well let me begin by saying my cycling style is best described as that of a lumbering commuter. I enjoy my cycle in and out of town every weekday and occasionally head out to Howth or Bohernabreena but you won't see me at any sportive or race so I don't really get to contribute too much to this forum but I thought this story is worth sharing.

This Friday night I was cycling home from town towards home. Anyway I was about a mile from home and going along nicely, conditions were good wind was slack. Anyway as I was going along a small hatchback with an L plate drives by and the passenger shouts out at me "ya fat pr*ck" or something derogatary to that effect. Now normally I would brush this off but it was the 2nd time that week that something like that had happened so I was quite annoyed. I sped up trying to follow the car but traffic was light so it pulled ahead. The road reached a roundabout where I knew our chase would end, however just as the car approached the roundabout I noticed it turn left into a side road for an estate. I knew the area pretty well and there had been another left earlier so I could assume there was only a few roads this car would be.

So anyway I reached this turn about a minute after the car and followed it down, the road branched it a few other turns but I just followed it straight. Lo and behold what do I see pulled in but the very same car. I roll up to the car, the driver doesn't see me. Give the car window a rap and he turns and sees me and his face falls. He fumbles with the window and opens it. I notice there are 4 lads in the car, all about 17 some with their school uniforms still on them. I don't remember the exact conversation as I was filled with adrenaline but it went something like this

Me: To driver - "Was that you that was shouting at me on the main road there?"

    Driver "No wasn't"

Me - points to passenger "So was it you?"

Passenger "No no it wasn't me........we were just saying hi"

With that slip I knew I had them.

Me "So it was you then. Do I know you? Why are you shouting at me if I don't know you?"

So at this stage I press on, start lecturing them for a few minutes and asking if any of them have a full licence, which they don't. Start telling them I should report them to the garda for what they did and driving without a full licence. The driver starts offering apologies and saying his test is next week. So I gave them one last warning about what they did and cycled on.

I felt I did the right thing and I hope those lads will think again before they do it. Not once did I swear at them or lose the head. I was calm throughout. I have never done something like this before but it was worth it.

Did you recognise the school uniforms? I remember some lads from my primary school getting dragged across the coals for messing with fireworks or something while wearing their uniforms in full view of a bank's CCTV cameras.
