Joint Assessment retrospectively

Upon recently helping with their affairs i have noticed that my mam and dad were separately assessed for tax since they married in the 1980's.

Due to ignorance of the system on their parts they never advised Revenue of their marriage.

My mam worked since then with a moderate PAYE salary. My dad has been unable to work since late 1980's for health reasons.

Presumably they would have benefitted from being taxed jointly all this time i.e. tax bands, credits etc.

Is it possible for them to advise revenue of their wish to be assessed jointly and retrospectively apply for a re-assessment of their tax since the 1980's or even last 4 years.?Or is it too late and can they only opt to be jointly assessed going forward?

My gut feeling is that it's too late but any info would be much appreciated :)

They can advise Revenue of their marriage now and opt for joint assessment from 2008 onwards. Fill in the joint assessment form and submit to Revenue ASAP.
