Becoming Chartered

    Hi All,

I graduated from Cork IT with a bachelor of Science level 8 in electrical power systems. I am currently lucky enough to be working with a company that have put me through a graduate programme which encorporated a level 9 business management post grad.

My issue is that recently I have begun looking at the road to chartership with engineers Ireland. Now I realise that I will need at least another 2 years work experiance but I have just found out that my level 8 degree is not acredited by IEI for chartered status. I would need to apply for assosiate status based on my level 7 degree. To be honest I feel a little cheated as I was not aware of this.

I am wondering if there is another way I can go about it in order to apply for chartership? I dont want to have to give up work and do an accredited level 8 or Masters. I was looking at bringing up my credentials through the open university by taking modules like the one below:http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/course/t398.htm.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Assessment Route Applications
If you do not have the accredited qualification required to apply for any of the registered professional titles, with relevant experience you may be able to apply for an assessment of your eligibility for an experiential learning route to the registered professional title. kinda in same boat but I knew my course was only accredited level 7 by engineers ireland . 2 more years is a kick in the balls tbh just to get accredited level 8 but what makes it worst is by the time you finish that you will actually need level 9 i think!!! engineers ireland are after changing the road to chartership i think again but not 100 % on that

+1, I think you can ask EI to consider individual circumstances - the chartership criteria aren't completely rigid. For example, someone with lots of experience but without an accredited degree could be accepted. Similarly, some postgrad study can count towards work experience if it's relevant.

I don't know how this works in practice, but it was certainly mentioned at an EI chartership info night some time ago.

    Hey everyone,

Just want to pop in on this thread to say we have a lot of Chartered Engineers from a wide range of educational and experience backgrounds.

All of your experience and knowledge development will be taken into consideration when you are applying for the registered professional title.

As you have a mix of qualifications, both accredited and unaccredited, the best option would be to contact the membership team directly who can talk through the options with you and advise you on your best course of action. You can contact them at 01-6651334 or email at membership@engineersireland.ie.

Hope this helps in answering your query.
