I know the 1.6Tdi in the S40 is self priming, so would re-start eventually after you put enough fuel in. Maybe check in the manual to see if there are any instuctions there.

On the S40 it did need 15 litres of fuel as the fuel tank is very flat and 5 (or even 10) just didn't cut it.

Another possibly dumb question having never ran dry before, I don't seem to be able to fill the tank with the plastic can and hose! Is there a way round this? Or will I have to push the damn thing to garage

In your glove box there should be a plastic funnel to open the tank I work in car rental and all our ford focus have this don't try and open it with your fingers because it will just close shut hope this helps.

If the funnell isn't in the glove box (usually in a plastic zip lock bag) then it may be in with the spare wheel.

If you stick a decent bit of fuel in it and just turn it over with the key, hopefully it will start for you.

Got sorted, thanks all...funnel was in the boot. I foresaw a cold evening with circling wolves etc.
I'm off now to deal with the embarrassment and a terribly smug girlfriend....

"I'll be grand for another 20kms" I said
