I noticed that my springer bitch is after getting hard mouthed, crunching down on birds and won't leave me take them out of her mouth. Any one got any advice on how to cure this?

Heard of fellahs wrapping barbed wire around birds and throwing them for the dogs does this work?

Barbed wire is a bit extreme:eek:, I think something like a bristle's from a brush
wrapped around a dummy might help, i am sure there are better experienced people here will advise you, good luck

Take a dead bird and stick it in the deep freeze, when frozen throw it for the dog i believe this will sort your dog out

How many times would you want to do this or how would you go about it?

And has this only started now ? Is the dog been worked much , has it happened much if it was only the once I put it down to excitement but if it all the time , I'd start looking for a new dog .

    Huge +1

This is what a mate of mine reccomended and it works perfect. When I started with mine as a young dog I started with snipe and worked up in sizes. But if your dog is five I presume you could start with a bigger bird.

Did he just get a hard mouth all of a sudden?? What would cause that I wonder???

I had a bitch go hard mouthed on me before, it was my on fault I shot a grey crow once only wingin it, I sent the dog to pick it up and it pecked her. Ever after that she gave any bird she picked up a chomp to make sure it was finished off.

Im not sure if there's anyway to get a dog out of this.:(

Couple of things to try for you .
Get a woodcock or simular sized bird and wrap a thorny blamble (briar) around it then put it into a sock and use it as a dummy for a while for her to fetch . She won't like biting down on that !
Failing that , get a glass bottle. A Heavy one like a dummy sized vodka bottle and cable tie a set of pheasant wings to it . Throw it on some soft ground for her and when she picks it , the clink of her teeth on it will put her off biting down on it .

Let us know how you go .
