have you already a sat dish and aerial installed in your house?

If so then you only need a device that can get rte/ tv3 off the aerial and uk services from the satelite
Something like this for 75 euros http://www.tvtrade.ie/satellite-combo.html would suffice and is 210 euros cheaper than getting in billfreetv to install something that you may not need

I would recommend before contacting any installer getting lots of advice to try and find what is the best system for you.

Any company can whack up a dish, the main things to choosing a company should be:

    1) Are they local

    2) Are they part of any trade organisation who you can complain to:
    http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/installers/

    3) Are they reasonable value for money (get 3 quotes)

    4) Will they guarantee the work for say a year and give a vat receipt

    5) Will they offer advice and suggestions when on site.

But it's really up to yourself to decide what you need. All boxes have pro's and con's. Generally the more you pay the more channels you get and the better TV guide you get and the better recording options you get (like series link)

There is a list of suppliers here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=155714

Also go with your gut feeling, if they act like a chancer they probably are.

if you have the UK channels already via freeview on the aerial (as presumably you already have a saorview box) then why do you want to throw 280 euros to someone to come along and install a sat dish to get a number of extra channels of questionable quality more than the 50 odd Freeview channels which to be honest is plenty of TV.

a lot of the free channels via satellite are stuff like GOD Tv and whatnot which most folks wont be watching anyhow.

And then there's the 900's .......................at the other end of the spectrum:D.
And most people MIGHT like to watch...........;).

An elderly neighbour of mine got them in to replace his Sky service. Afterwards he found their box and menus hard to navigate, and their after-sales support not great. He had chatted to them at their stall at some Home exhibition in the RDS or something like that.

Certainly handy to get someone if to do the installation/setup if you don't have the expertise or time.

He asked me to have a look and I was able to figure out the basic menus and explain it to him, and write it down. The manual that came with the box was from the manufacturer, not customized for the service.

The neighbour particularly wanted the BBC4 channel, which I know is available on services like this (and is on their website channel list). There's certainly an enormous amount of channels available.

All the satellite channels were listed in Alphabetical order, rather than by category. This leads to strange juxtopositions like "GayXexchange" being near "Islam TV", and "Babestation" being near Cbeebies and CBBC. "Essex Babes" and "Euronews", and so on.

I didn't have all day to figure it out, and couldn't find BBC4. All the other BBC channels were there though. I did figure out how to delete channels though. I was asked to do this for the plethora of Adult ones, particularly as young grandchildren would be visiting the house.

Eventually I just decided to phone them, and ask about the availability of BBC4, and also what could be done about re-ordering and re-categorising the channel. The responses weren't impressive. In relation to BBC4, the guy who answered said "it should be there, dont know why its not". He couldnt provide any ideas of how to get it.

In relation to why the Adult channels come as default, and the alphabetical channel list. He couldnt provide any reason for this, except that "some people want them, you know". No ideas on how to re-categorise the channels either.

Basically the impression I got from them was that they had done their job installing it, had gotten paid, and weren't interested afterwards. Just my two cents anyway. Best to do as much research as you can in advance.

BBC 3 and BBC 4 are visible on a scan after 7.00pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,824 ✭✭✭donaghs

The BBC3 channel was visible at all times, but no service as you say till after 7. BBC3 programs could be watched after 7pm. But the BBC4 channel was not visible, before or after 7pm

Are you saying that if you scan for it after 7pm it should be available?

bbc3 and bbc4 share the channel with the BBC childrens channels. If you can find cbbc and cbeebies then after 7pm bbc4 will be viewable on one of those channels and bbc3 will be on the other

I found that one of these childrens' channels (can't recall which) was transmitting BBC 1 after kids programs went off air, and that a rescan was necessary to see the BBC 3 (I think, it was). - this was on an Ariva 150.

10773 H 22000 shows Cbeebies during the day and becomes BBC Four after 7PM
10818 V 22000 shows CBBC during the day and becomes BBC Three after 7PM

10773 also includes some "Red Button" channels which could be showing sports, extra content such as "Springwatch" or children's content at any time

Those boxes are not suitable for those who want a simple experience or have no interest in tinkering with them.

Drives me nuts hearing of them being sold to elderly people.

Thanks guys, BBC4 found after 7pm on one of BBC kids channels

Hmm, Freeview might have words with them over their logo...

Are they supplying Ferguson Arivas or another make ?

Its very easy to install an ariva with a pre loaded channel list in a reasonable order including BBC 3/4 .I also think its more consumer friendly not to pre load adult channels, not being judgmental but if someone wants them they have the choice to tune them in themselves .
Have a to say I think the earlier generalization about elderly people is a little bit ageist. Really depends on the box and its ease of use . Combos have and always will be a compromise for those who do not want two boxes and an extra remote

No not a Ferguson. Ali Chipset though (telltale menus) so same m3602 (think old Ariva 120) generic editor etc.

Its a Globo/Orton/Opticum HD X110P made by Junuo in Shenzhen in China.

Unit price of about $32 (€24) once you buy a few, plus shipping costs, so they are well below €50 cost!

They are up in Ballymount according to the video Tony. Do you know of them ?

Opticum is a pretty decent box so a channel list would be as easy as the ferguson I would have thought. Ballymount is pretty close to me but I've not met any of the guys from the company mentioned.
