If you can find the Metroid Prime Trilogy at a decent price, don't hesitate and buy it. I have 1&2 on the Game Cube and 3 on the Wii but I still want the trilogy and also want Nintendo to release a HD collection/remake of them to mark the 10th anniversary.
As for Other M, it's grand but it isn't widely liked.

You may as well get Mario Kart as well.
If you're a fan of the Prince of Persia sands of Time games, get the Wii version of Forgotten Sands
Red Steel 2 and House of the Dead Space Extraction are also good.

If an RPG fan, Xenoblade has received comments like being the best RPG of this generation. Haven't played it myself.

I also say the Zelda games and Okami for the best non-Zelda Zelda game. :)
And another vote for Zack and Wiki

Animal Crossing is quite good you can pick it up dirt cheap now too.

    Little Kings Story
    Muramasa
Super Paper Mario, although not the best in the series, is also pretty good

The game I enjoyed the most on the Wii was Punch-out. You should get that.

I'll do this again, and add a couple. If you're anyway a fan of late-99/early-00 lightgun Sega games, then likes of House of the Dead 2 & 3 return, Ghost Squad and Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns will go down a treat. You get the obvious nostaliga-blast, but there's enough replayability and extras in them, so its appeal reaches a bit further.

Also, if you're into 2D-fighters, Tatsunoko vs Capcom is a must. It's pretty much the beta for what was to become Marvel vs Capcom 3, yet I still get more play out of Tatsunoko. Maybe it's more fun as game, maybe I'm a contrarian arse, you decide. You can actually pick up the game and its arcade-stick for pretty cheap too, if you're that way inclined.

And, on a very much on-the-radar note, Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the better gaming investments I made in my life. New-school tweaks meshed with old-school challenge. Having played DKC 1-3 to completion, I'd consider Returns my favourite of the series. It's been mentioned, but I never miss a chance to gush about it.

If you're anyway a fan of point-and-click games, Sam & Max: Season 1 makes an appearance on the Wii. Mrs. Saturn swears by them, so there you go.

Just to point out I think Tatsunoko is going to be hard to find soon. The license is up so I think it has to pulled from shelves.

Super smash bros brawl is a great multiplayer game when you have a few mates around. Also Mario kart and Rayman Origins - You should be able to get a cheap copy of that

I would suggest Metroid Trilogy as a most excellent package, three great games for one pretty small price, all with motion control.
