Saorview box and recording

I have a saorview box with a USB for recording and a VCR recorder.
    I have a few questions.

Will these boxes work with external HDD's for recording or does it need to be flash?

Is there some way I can set it up so that I can recording from a different channel than the one I'm watching?
Can I set it to record so it will come on and record if it's off?
Is there a box I can get to do that? Freeview HD one from the north? I'm close to the border.

I'd prefer the simplest method as my folks will be using it and aren't exactaly technical.

I don't own a Saorview STB so won't be able to answer your specific questions completely.

The simplest solution for your parents will be a Saorview approved PVR, expected soon. It's reported to have a DVB-T2 tuner, so it should also work with the FreeviewHD channels from NI. Cost will be in the region of €250.

I believe most existing STBs will work with an external HDD but record and watch the same channel.

There is a Triax TR212 with twin tuners wihich will allow you to watch one channel - record one channel to an external HDD

FreeviewHD PVRs should also work with Saorview, best to ask here before you purchase in case there are any potential problems that people may have come across.

Often external HDD need their own PSU. If there is an NTFS option it's superior to FAT32 for format.

An internal HDD dual tuner box is a true PVR. I hope there is some choice of these over the next few months.

The Triax 212 is a kludge, it's just a dual tuner version of 112. Triax buy it in with their badge and the software customised a bit. The original un-customised SW has no annoying branding

Ok so I bought a 4ife sv-400 as I saw it could record one channel and watch another, and has space for a hdd.

The problem is it will only let you watch channels on the same frequency as the one you are recording. iS this as good as its going to get for a while?

No,it is better already.I have a Panasonic Freeview+Bluray recorder that has two tuners.a 1000GB HHD built in.It decodes the Saorview channels but is not Saorview approved and if you are near the border will give you all the Freeview channels. The Saorview EPG can be displayed but individual programme information or subtitles are still not available but hopefully will appear on a software update. It has a few other niggles but I believe no other box on the market will outshine it.You can input most other devices on its great connectivity. Very few boxes now on the market support AV inputs. The make is Panasonic DMR 720 and is about twice the price of the long expected box mentioned in the above post. And it is available in Ireland cheaper than in the UK.TMULL
