Looking at trading in an 08 Golf Comfort Line 105km (1.4 petrol) against a used 2012 1.6 Diesel Golf. Lot of them out there - Price to change 14K or thereabouts - looking at r editions with about 20,000km on them.

Is this madness or would I be better off buying new? Any thoughts/advice welcome on this one!

did you get a cost to change on a new 13 plate? .....would that not be the first thing to do to evaluate it?

Yes youre right voice in my head, the tax IS the same, and wouldnt 14k buy a lot of petrol.

Seems like your getting a lousy value for your Golf, only to get into another Golf, I can't see why you would want to do it.

€14k? They saw you coming I'm afraid...

As said above why bother to get into a slightly newer model?

Surely you could shift that Golf privately for circa 10-11k and get a decent cash price discount from the dealer.

    14k...horrific

Is there any specific reason for going from a 1.4 petrol to a 1.6 diesel? Is there problems with the '08 one? If not why spend €14k on a newer number plate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭shamu2new

No there is no problem with the 08 one - its a good car - going to move to diesel as Im commuting now annual mileage will be much higher. I didnt price the new one - will do tomorrow but just assumed it would be well out of my price reach - Im not great on haggling. Should I be looking for a deal about 2k less for the 2012 and mabe around 14K then for the 13 model. I went to three dealers and their bottom prices for the 2012 ranged from 14495 to 13750 for changing - none seem too keen on moving any lower. Thanks so far.

€14k to trade up 4 years from a less popular petrol model to a diesel model is about right in my book, that is just over €3k a year which I would see as normal. The days for trading up for around €2k a year are well gone.

And I doubt very much anyone would pay €10k to €11k privately for a nearly 5 year old 1.4 petrol Golf. There are plenty of similar cars asking between €7500 and €9000 on donedeal.

At 25k km a year I'd be wanting a diesel too tbh.

I would really look to sell your Golf privately, they go for silly money these days and try and do a cash deal with the dealer on a used diesel one. :)

You do know know that there is a new model Golf on sale for 2013? Trading up to a 13 reg new model will cost you alot more than €14k for a 12 reg old model.

Also why another Golf, the 1.6 is nothing to write home about, what about a Kia Ceed? At least them you will have cruise, bluetooth and all the bits that cost extra on the Golf. If you're doing big miles these things matter.

Sorry to jump in here OP but I was wondering what people think of the new Golf Mk7? I had a look at one yesterday and I was very impressed. Very nice interior, especially the drivers area. I'm thinking of changing the mrs car for a 105bhp Tdi 1.6. She currently drives a petrol Focus but she's doing big enough mileage. The economy figures seem incredible.

My father looked at buying a 12 reg Golf recently. The highline was the only model worth looking at in terms of spec - it had a nice few extras that you wouldn't expec on a Golf normally like front and rear sensors, folding mirrors and decent alloys etc.

In the end he went for a Platinum spec Ceed (this is the car) as he preferred it to any of the other similar cars he tried, liked the warranty and especially the specification. There are deals to be had on them too if you shop around - he didn't pay anything remotely approaching list for his. In the end, buying straight cash, he got his for a little under €26k.

That would be the logical choice alright, but if the OP bought a new petrol golf back in 08' I can't see the Kia being popular with those that like their ''soft touch plastics'' and impeccable refinement.

The diesel Golf MK6 is actually a nice car but these days the Koreans have caught up so quickly that suddenly the difference is not great enough to justify the price difference. Also the Kia has a 7 year warranty.

You're dead right actually. I was using carzone as a reference. My bad

    14k still seems a lot.

Plus 1 on the ceed. Maybe an Alfa Giulietta?

Thanks for the suggestions but it is really a Golf I want ... I know I know.... it just suits - bigger boot etc... Im hoping to head out tomorrow to see how I get on with lowering the 14K on a 2012 as I really couldnt go any higher than that on the 2013. I will have another look at the Kia but my first choice would be the golf. I dont like the Guiletta - back seat legroom too uncomfortable.

If you want a VW then why not go for a Passat, not as in demand as a Golf yet you get a much better class of car.

I'd expect your €14K and Golf with a bit of haggling would get something like this, plenty more saloons available too.

Used cars don't miraculously drop in price on 1st Jan. They are probably selling now for near to what they will be in January, the only difference with the Golf is that main dealers are probably more flexible on prices now in order to clear used stock to make room for new used stock when people religiously trade their old Golf in for the new one come Jan.

Easy to spend somebody else's money, but I would be trying to land a 2013 new model- stick with petrol and get the 105bhp 1.2 which is Band A. The spec doesn't look too bad. I'd be tempted by a Trend line and spend 1200 quid extra for alloys/ fogs/ tints and sports seats, and if you don't need back doors get a 3 door and save €1000. As well as getting new car smell, you will get 3 year warranty, 3 years servicing.

I have yeah, I like em' and wouldn't have a problem driving one. What I was saying is I reckon that a Golf owner wouldn't want a Kia, regardless of how good everyone else think they are. I prefer the Kia's engine over the 1.6TDI in my mates Golf.

    Badge prestige and all that...:o

What about a Lexus CT200H or a Honda Civic?
Not sure about the Lexus but anyone I've known with the new Civics has loved them.

Jaysus the ceed has come on a long way, it's actually a far nicer looking car than a golf!

OP, is your objective to spend 14 Grand to get a new car because you want a new car or to save money on petrol by buying a Diesel ? 14K is a lot of petrol. You would only save 10-15 mpg over the petrol, (if even and probably a lot less in city driving ) that's an extra 3.5-5 kms per litre if getting a real 10-15 mpg better.

You would save maybe 5 Cent per litre (the current difference between petrol and diesel, down here anyway) over the petrol max for an extra 3-5kms max. That will take a very long time to make back 14,000 euro's

How about converting to LPG ? or buying a TFSI Golf or A4 and converting that to LPG ?
