How do I get broadband in my area?

Hi there, looking for some advice.

As with probably most people on this forum, I live in an area with no broadband! The frustrating thing is that I'm closely between 2 towns (Trim and Navan) that have it. There are roughly over 160 houses in the main vicinity of the town itself.

I wanted to know is there anything I can do to push for BB in the area or am I pi$$ing against the wind, trying to contact the powers that be, as well as all the main Broadband providers? I was even thinking of getting a petition together in the area to try and entice a broadband provider to set up.

I contacted Damian English TD about it and his response was:
Thanks for email. You might recall that a plan was being formulated last year by Government, this has been launched on the 30th August 2012. I have made enquiries with the Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte TD, on how your town fits into the recent National Broadband - I will be in touch when I have information for you.

Here's the link to the Departments website. http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Press+Releases/2012/Minister+Rabbitte+Delivering+a+Connected+Society+%e2%80%93+A+National+Broadband+Plan.htm

Bective, Ardbracan and Clonmacduff electoral divisions are in the National Broadband Scheme which is open until July 2014.

The nominal specifications were upgraded in October.

As you probably know it's a request based scheme and it's midband and the 'infrastructure' part of it ended two years ago.

Now that the Department have announced the National Broadband Plan, it's unlikely that there will be new investment by any provider in rural areas until they see what's coming by way of state subsidised competition.

You can find a list of fixed wireless providers on the AskComReg website.

They use Ubiquiti gear sourced I would assume from Wipipe in Waterford. Wipipe are great guys , very helpful. You are much closer to civilisation in terms of a backhaul link than they are.

However aim to make no profit and no reward for your work other than very happy neighbours.

Sounds good! My original plan was to enquire as to getting a switch/exchange in the area to get in proper (non satellite) broadband! Not sure how feasible this would be?
