What has Curiosity discovered...?

Nasa have stated that Curiosity has discovered something on Mars that is ''One for the history books''

They are currently checking, and double checking their findings before releasing a statment on 3rd December.

What do you think it is.......???

Some vague mineral composite that was akin to some vague mineral composite on earth billions of years ago that indicates mars had very similar geological structure to earth once upon a time. There results will be ambiguous and say nothing definitive about past or present life but will be some sort of vague confirmation that the conditions for it were likely to have existed. NASA is mega-broke. Their funding has been butchered by the last few Congresses. They need to spin out a few hyped up press conferences out of this mission. Fiscal cliff coming up ladies and gentlemen - squeaky wheels need grease !

But they would indicate that the building blocks for life are present on Mars and might only need the addition of water, which Mars had in the past, in order to produce organisms.

The fact that they are being very secretive about it implies it's quite a big deal. Otherwise they would have released more information and cautioned everyone that it's early days, requires more testing etc etc. Instead they've just suggested that it's a major event.

They are worried about contamination from something carried there from Earth. But you would imagine the sampling equipment was well and truly sterilised considering it was the crux of the mission.

That may indicate life but not as we know it, and certainly not intelligent.

No, I doubt if they'll try that stunt again. I'd say Bill Clinton wasn't too pleased the way they jumped the gun the last time so I can't see them ever making that mistake again.

For those who don't remember, NASA made an announcement along the following lines....

1. We found a meteorite in the Antarctic, we think it came from Mars

2. Under the microscpope we found these little squiggly thingies

3. They might indicate the presence of a primitive form of life or at least the building blocks of organic material..

Completely discredited afterwards, egg on faces all round.

I'm not expecting much because I don't want to get my hopes up. I'm willing to bet that whatever it is won't feature in the history books.

Except maybe in an oddly specific one titled "The History of Mars Exploration - Volume 3".

NASA have already issued an "cooling" statement after John Grotzinger's interview. It seems he got a little carried away with his description!

A spokesman for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managing the project, appeared to pour cold water Wednesday on the hopes of space enthusiasts looking forward to an earth-shattering discovery.

“John was delighted about the quality and range of information coming in from SAM during the day a reporter happened to be sitting in John’s office last week. He has been similarly delighted by results at other points during the mission so far,” spokesman Guy Webster told AFP.

The rover also detected its first organic compounds in the form of chlorinated methane created during the analysis process within the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) tool. However, while the chlorine is definitely from Mars, the carbon might be of more Earthly origin, carried to the planet by the rover.

What good is this rover curiosity if it is contaminated with earthly carbon ? Isn't that what curiosity is on mars for, to look for life, so how can it look for life if it's whole systems are contaminated sure that would be a complete waste of time.

But the thing is when/if they do find life on a smaller micro organism scale you'll get people saying its from earth 'it was carried by the rover or people' bla bla bla. The only way people are going to believe in life outside of earth is a more complex visible living thing. I honestly think Europa is our best chance in our solar system.
Most people wont get excited for tiny micro organisms, I will however.
