The Ferrycarrig “5” and Crossabeg/ Ballymurn Community Centre:

The next fundraising event on the calendar for Crossabeg/ Ballymurn Community Centre (the Centre) is the running of the first “Ferrycarrig 5” five mile road race on 13 January 2013 (1.00pm). The race starts at Wexford Youths FC complex and will follow an anti-clockwise route through Newcastle, out and up the hard shoulder of the N11 from Kitestown Cross to Kyle Cross to return back to Wexford Youths FC for the finish.

Although called the Ferrycarrig 5, the race doesn’t go down the hill towards the river. The consequence of this is a reasonably flat course leading to the possibility of fast times and hopefully personal bests for the runners.

The achievement of getting the Centre to where it is today is admirable in itself and to maintain it is another accomplishment. Bringing it on to the next phase is the new challenge that now faces the Committee. Fundraising can be difficult at the best of times and in the current environment is particularly taxing.

The Committee are inviting runners or walkers of all abilities to participate in the race. The atmosphere is set to be one of welcome and indeed preparations are underway to make the day enjoyable for all. There is a full list of prizes on offer including veteran’s categories. Entry to the junior section is at a discounted rate where prizes are also on offer. The junior entry is available by emailing ferrycarrig5@gmail.com for an entry form. Forms will also be available throughout the area at various outlets.

Stalwarts of the local athletics club, St Killian’s AC, will be involved in the lead up and on the day lending their expertise ensuring a successful race. The route is being measured accurately by a qualified Athletics Ireland certified Road Course Measurer. An Athletics Ireland permit is being applied for meaning that the race will be officially registered for personal bests and qualifying times etc.

On line entry is now available at www.runireland.com. Although this facility is set up entries are also being accepted by entry form which can be obtained by emailing ferrycarrig5@gmail.com. There is also a Facebook page which will be updated with any news or developments on the event over the coming weeks leading up to the race.

The Ferrycarrig 5 Five Mile Road Race now includes a Team Competition.

Teams of 3 will be eligible for a winners prize of €105.00 in Mysport vouchers. The Prize is on offer for both men and women.

If you enter on line your club will be taken as the team with the three first to score. The scoring will be based on position rather than time.

Alternatively if you are running for a team other than a club you can inform the organizers at time of registration.

    TrevorC;

At this stage there are still some left. We are ordering additional supply, however its hard to say how many will be left on the day. Entry will be available along with registration on Saturday 12 1 2013 from 2.00PM to 4.00PM and from 11.00AM on Sunday 13 1 2013. If you enter on Saturday I'd say there would be a good chance.

Absolutely! Seemed very well supported, so hopefully it becomes a calendar fixture. Very handy to have it now, just before the Enniscorthy 10km and Dungarvan 10 Miler.

Sorry to leave so much cake behind me, my only regret of the day.:)

yeah, were taking 2014 here but its still the same timeframe.
That will hurt (no doubt), but I've made my peace with it.
Lotta gallops to go before then to get the mind and body right :)

Fair play yesterday. I think that race has a big future and is worth travelling for (i came from Dublin)

The supply of cake alone was worth going for. I defo made a profit on the entry fee in cake consumed alone.

Nice one Jeff, very good time. I see you even got a write up on Crusaders website - http://www.crusadersac.org/index.php/news/article/ferrycarrig_5_mile

Some inaccuracies in the article from Rene though, I'll bring them up with him next time I see him.

hi Cambo, sure just share them here, anything in the article is accurate to the best of my knowledge but I rely on what I am told by our runners and members (about PBs) etc. I take it there may be more than one Crusader doing Donadea?

I think cambo might be giving Donadea a whirl in the white with the red cross.

I am. I don't have a club singlet though. I was probably 14 the last time I wore one. I was a svelte slip of a lad then, not so now. I wouldn't want to scare the children by wearing one these days
