Fog lights come on with headlights

Hi, i have a problem with the front fogs on my ford focus 1.4 petrol 2002. I had used the fogs last Saturday morning for about a half hour, that night I turned on my headlights and the fogs came on with them. Now every time I turn on my heads this happens.

I have a driving test coming up so, if anybody has any advice on the matter it will be greatly appreciated. :)

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but are you sure your not inadvertently pulling on the light switch when you turn on the headlights?

    Turn headlights on.

While headlights on, keep switching fog lights switch on and off - if fogs go on and off, just leave them in "off" position.

If they're constantly on, it more than likely means that fog relay is broken (permanently stuck). Find it yourself, or ask someone to do so. Pull relay away - fogs should go off. If they're not - go to good electrician, or at least remove bulbs. ;)

But then you'll have the problem with NCT. :D

It could be the light switch that's at fault or else it's a bad earth connection. Check for rusty earths around the engine bay. They can be cleaned up with some sand paper.

    Well,

because this problem was only occurring with dipped heads on, I assumed the dipped heads relay could be defective. So I had a look in my manual and located relay 6 (dipped heads) in the auxiliary box in the engine, removed it ,and low and behold, lights returned to normal,lovely..perfect

Now…..so the obvious conclusion would be that the dipped heads relay needs to be replaced? ….. Wrong, because it’s a general relay and I have 3 identical ones also in the auxiliary box, used one of these to replace it and ,no good I’m back to square one (front fogs come on with heads)

    I'm not sure. :o

Some of cars allow you to turn fogs on only when dipped on. Some allow the same when at least parking lights are on. It depends on brand, model, etc. Refer to car's manual. :)

Anyway, many of car makers use the same relays, so it's really easy to get some second hand ones for replacement. New ones (I guess) wouldn't be extremely dear either. ;)
