Enterprise Instant Messagaing

The company I work for doesn't have any instant messaging functionality so I'm looking for a quick fix for this.

I'd like to be able to IM members of our IT department, then, depending on how well it works, try to convince my boss to introduce it across the company, department by department.

The obvious solution would be pidgin but you seem to need to use a personal gmail account for this - is there any free solution to allow use of company email addresses to IM across an organization.

Office Communicator and Lync aren't options at the moment.

    Would appreciate some input, TIA
