I remember in the early to mid 80's when I was in primary school there were these sweets that looked exactly like cigarettes. They were white and chewy and had a red tip and as far as I remember they came in a pack that vaguely resembled a cigarette packet. We used to have great fun with them in school pretending we were smoking but I imagine the uproar if they were about now with changing attitudes to smoking.Anyone know the ones I'm talking about?

They were popular in Germany as well, I remember them from the late 70s/early 80s, they had some chocolate like taste

There were two types - the ones you describe darkdubh and ones that I think were white chocolate wrapped in paper - just like the real thing.

Now that I think about it more I think some of the packets featured Popeye on the cover.

They were often just called "sweet" or "chocolate" cigarettes. We used to collect the wrappers and some used to contain a picture card.

Offically they are now banned but I ve seen them in a few shops that get stock from the north .

Also for the more sophisticated children there were liqorise pipes

They're called candy sticks nowadays. My mum gave up smoking at one stage and used to send us to the shop for them so she could hold them which is apparently something quitters do?! Very embarrassing because we would have been in our teens at the time lol!! :D

I remember the chocolate ones were in packs like cigarettes. It was milk chocolate in a white wrapping which was hard to get off.

I never saw the other white candy sticks in cigarrette type packs. I think one had a footballer on the front, a drawing of one striking a ball.

Now they just took the red bit off.

Candy Cigarettes, each pack has 10 white candy sticks, ready to be rolled up in your T-shirt sleeve. Unfortunately they no longer have the red tip.

    Candy Cigarettes history

There is evidence that the candy makers actually worked with the cigarette companies to attract young smokers. To the left are some examples of packs from the 1950s. Today the are called candy sticks and the names are not the same as actual cigarette companies. [more below]

    EDIT: found the football ones.

Superman is so cool. I don't remember this ad. Maybe if I did, I would have never smoked.

There were also ones that were chocolate with what looked like cigarette paper covering the chocolate stick and the paper was coloured brown (like a filter paper) at the end.
