FYI I paid for my itab on registration and it arrived by post today. No email to confirm what I wanted engraved as initially advised, just my name and chip time (which is what I would have opted for anyway).

The iTab is supposed to have your name and finish time on it, thats the whole point of it. Its based on the name you supply when you register and your chip finish time.

So why would they ask you what you wanted on it?

imho, its a better and faster system then they used last year when you had to order the iTab yourself with a voucher code,

clicks into the back of your medal

That explains where it goes, but what does it do?

It has your name and finish time on it, and it's bluetooth-enabled.
so instead of bringing your medal off to be engraved with your name and time, you get an iTab sent out in the post and it clicks into your medal.
The bluetooth bit is not exactly true.

Pity. The bluetooth bit made it sounds interesting.

No bluetooth but a 2D barcode link to your garmin link of the run

I was thinking more in line with near field communications. Wouldn't it be cool if all of your medals had an NFC tag, which included stats about your race, like chip-time, splits, position, etc? Then, as you approach old-age, and you pick up that medal from DCM 2008 and start to reminisce, you can't lie to your grand-children about running with the Kenyans!

Sounds like the medal shoe box will have to get bigger if I am to store a medal and itab now instead of just a medal!
