My wife was telling me a story today, about a work colleague who was rear ended while going into work. She had indicators on, stopped and bang! She got out and the driver told her he was sorry, but he didn't have tax or insurance!

He was giving his details to her, but she felt he could be anyone. She got his passport details. He said he wanted to pay for damage.

After a few minutes she decided to goto the nearest Garda station to report it. She told the Garda on duty about what happened. The Garda (unbelievable) told her to try and sort it out with the other driver, he wasn't a bit interested that the driver had no tax or insurance!!

I'm bloody fuming the attitude the Garda had towards he situation.I wouldn't dare drive a car without having tax or insurance....

Gardai tend not to get involved unless someone is injured.

She might have been better off actually calling a guard to the scene.

I'd be going to look for the sergeant in charge of the station and explaining what happened. I'm a guard and that's completely unacceptable. In saying that, reporting it to the gardai isn't automatically gonna get her the money to repair the car, just means he'll be prosecuted for no insurance.

^^ I hear what your saying Charlie, just found it unreal. I can only imagine the amount of people driving uninsured or taxed. Point is he shouldn't of been on the road in first place.

Yeah, it is. If me, or one of my drivers goes out without tax, we usually get pulled and questioned/fined let alone no insurance. I'm p1ssed that I pay 15k + a year for insurance, 4.5k for road tax and everything is doe'd or nct'd and yet others are twirling around pleasing themselves with little or no consequences. It makes a mockery of those who actually bother to have tax and insurance and boils my blood. Being glib about it is great, but the gards being lax on some and down on others is sh1tty, crap and b0llox, tbh.

Yeah this. The Gardai didnt even see it, would have to catch them driving around in the act etc. Saying that, if you knew where he lived (and its not some inner city area with more serious Garda intensive crimes afoot) the local Gardai could easily just wait around and pull him over. I know of this being done.

Fair enough Matt, but if someone comes in and tells a Gard, cnut x just did Y, I'd like it if said Gard did a bit more than shrug.

Ah the usual Garda apologist answer that surfaces on this site whenever the force is shown in a negative light.

Why is it "complete BS" then?

Who said anything about de Gards ? I didn't.

Anything that starts with 'my wife was telling me about someone she works with who...' is likely to be BS.

Not to say that the OP is BS'ing.

I'm sure his wife did tell him a story about someone who she works with who...

Oh yeah the bit about the uninsured and untaxed driver who said sorry for not having insurance or tax. That was BS.

And the bit about how after a few minutes the person in question decided to go to the local Garda Station (presumably abandoning the scene of this incident rather than oh I don't know ringing the gardai on their mobile phone). That was BS too.

But hey, you swallow it whole my friend, swallow away happily. You don't want to be an apologist of some sort for goodness sake.

If you had of read , it happened outside her work place. She went on into work. Im sure she was in shock a bit, I know I would be. She collected her thoughts and then headed to local Garda station which was not far from her work place.....

Why didn't she just ring the guards at the time?
Especially when he told her he'd no insurance?

I have no idea why, I can only put it down as shock and pressure because it was a busy road outside a school.
