Which Grease Nipples?

    There seems to be a whole load of different variations of size and thread, like UNF; AF; BSP not to mention metric:confused: How do you know which ones to get?

    much like the ordinary nut and bolts I think it depends on your machine. older british built would be AF or BSP. euro stuff would be metric

    post back what you need them for.

    Threads would drive you mad at times. Even experienced guys find it hard to tell. What are you doing replacing old ones?
    Take out the old one and put a vernier across the threads. You should be able to tell then if the threads are Parallel or Tapered. Parallel ones will probably be either Metric (on a new machine) or BSPP, British Standard Pipe Parallel, usually called BSP.
    Secondly, estimate the pitch, (distance between threads) using a thread gauge like below or measure the length of say 3 threads with vernier and get average.

    If you can get your hands on a Zeus Book, you can figure it out with
    1- Thread outer diameter
    2 - Taper or Parallel
    3 - Thread pitch, often expressed as TPI, threads per inch.

    Long Winded but that's the complete way. Experienced guys would know by simply looking at it.

    I was just looking for a few to put on an old JCB, and to have a few spare to hand. Most of the stuff we have would be using imperial measurements. It's just the thread part that stumped me!

    I would say most older JCB's are imperial. A selection / assortment of grease nipples straight & angled to hand, wouldn't go a stray on any farm.

    Most garages sell assorted pack's of both imp & metric for a few euro and i would suggest to have a few ''Drive Fit'' Nipples also.

    These are just nipples without any thread, just ridges. Maybe not ideal i know but better than no grease nipple!

    A few euro worth of grease nipples around the place works out cheaper than a bushing or bearing, but be sure to keep the machine greased..
