I've a 01 car that has been off the road for over a year & half, its last nct expired on May 2011 & just wanted to know If I was to put it through the test again would it be back dated to may 2011 or would it start again from the new test date?

    Cheers Brian

Itll be back dated to May 2012 I think, so the next test would be due next May. I could be wrong about that though...

If you do it now, it will be backdated to May 2012 so it will still be out of date.

There's no such thing as backdating when it comes to NCT.
If you test it today, NCT cert and disc will be valid from today to May 2013.

Ah actually that makes sense. I was thinking of the three month rule.

So regardless of when it's out of date from, it's tested to the next due date?

Whereas if you do it within the 90 days before the next expiry date it gets done for a year/two years depending on the age of the car?

    DUH!

    Exactly.
If OP wait to do his NCT to February 2013 (max 90 days before due date) he would get NCT cert valid till May 2014.

Cheers for the reply's lads, that's good to know so the new cert will start from the date it passes the test.

It will, but it will finish at due date, so in your case May 2013, so therefore you will get cert valid for around 7 months.

Could somebody else bring my car to the NCT test if I can't make it or does it have to be the car owner?

Anyone can present a car for test as long as they have ID.

Based on a car more than 10 years old; I was only arguing this exact point the other day. So if your NCT expired by 9 months and you pass the NCT within 3 months of the due anniversary, you end up with up to 15 months valid NCT. Correct?

The person I argued this with insisted that if your nct was expired by 11 months and three weeks and then pass the NCT, you only get the cert for one week. Sounds bonkers to me. Is there a link to prove the first paragraph is correct?

    Validity of test certificate

    11. (1) Subject to paragraph (2), a test certificate ceases to be in force on that test due date which occurs after the certificate to which it relates was issued.

    (2) A test certificate which is issued

    (a) not more than 180 days before the first test due date, or

    (b) not more than 90 days before a test due date other than the first test due date,

continues in force until the subsequent test due date.
