Hi all any help would be very grateful

I have just found out i am going to be a father, but also found out she is 6 months pregnant so the rush is on, myself and my partner are both unemployed and living in seperate flats/bedsits but we are planning on move in together as soon as possible.

i have found out that the rent allowance limit for a couple and 1 child is €875, is that €875 towards the rent or is it the maximum i could rent is the €875. if the latter can anyone tell me how much we will get.

another question i have is do we have to wait till the baby is born to move into the house or would it be possible to move in a little befforehand as where each of us live will not be suitable for a new born

    thank you very much

Normally you have to have been renting privately for six months before you're assessed for RA. You also have to be assessed by the local council as being in need of housing, and supply proof of the same to the Rent Unit or CWO (depending on where you live).

I'm assuming by the RA you quote you're in Dublin? Might be an idea to speak to the CWO and hear what they have to say.

    OP Here

Thanks for the reply. Yes I am from Dublin I already have rent allowance for the past 8 months and my partner has it also. Just don't know how it works now that we are gonna be living together with a newborn.

Also wondering how much we would be entitled to,if anyone can help would be very grateful.

The amount specified for a couple with one child for the area in which you will be renting is the maximum your rent can be to qualify for Rent Supplement. As a couple you will pay a minimum of €35 per week towards your rent. Both of these figures could change in coming Budget.

As a couple living together your means test will take each other's earnings into account for any Jobseekers payments. The maximum rate at present for a couple is €188 + €124.80 and after the baby is born €29.80 will be added.

Thank you very much for that.
I know this is a long shot but would you know if they would let us move into a place before the baby is born as neither places we live in at the moment are suitable for a newborn. I am really worried about this.

You need to get advice from the CWO or the Central Rent Unit.
