Freesat + External HD

I have literally no idea where this belongs, it could go into any one of about 4 forums, as far as I can see, so feel free to move.

I currently have a Sky+ box and I use an old netbook to watch non-Sky stuff. I have an external HD that I currently use to physically transport the files I need. I had planned on upgrading to some sort of self-built HTPC to replace the netbook. Perhaps get into streaming but I'm happy with the current physical process, so I'm not sure.

I'm also looking into replacing Sky with a Humax Freesat box. [as an aside, I can't tell if my current Sky setup will allow me to record and watch at the same time, what should I be looking for at the back of the Sky box to check?]. On the long drive home, it occurred to me that maybe I could combine these 2 things. The Humax appears to allow you to connect an external HD - although there is some question about file formats - will it play AVI out of the box or do I have to convert them? This is a showstopper as far as I'm concerned, these are not files I'm planning on keeping, so I don't want any rigamarole.

Am I better off keeping my HTPC and my Freesat needs separate, or is there a clean and easy way to combine them in 1 box (stick a DVD player in there somewhere and I can get rid of another box under my telly :D)

Apologies for bumping own thread, but nobody has any tips on using an external hd plugged into a freesat+ box for watching non-recorded (AVI) files?

If the freesat box gives you an option to browse media then it should just be a matter of having the files in the right format for them to be viewable.

AVI is a container so may/may not be playable depending on the codec used

Find the manual and see what it says. (manuals are badly written though)

    or try a new thread

Will Humax Foxsat HDR 500GB Freesat HD Digital TV Recorder play AVI's ?

I think the Humax only plays .ts files recorded by itself (if HD) or another Humax HDR if SD.
There is a package to allow it to play other formats if you fancy modifying your firmware and connecting it to your router, will take some effort but plenty seem to have it working.
First you will need to read up here:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/freesat/1661195-media-file-server-bundle-foxsat-hdr-release-4-0-part-3-a.html
and install and configure the software. My own HDR is modded with this and works well

Then you will need to get more software called AV2 HDR (for your computer) from the same forum here: (haven't tried this personally, no need for it)

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/freesat/1411342-av2hdr-v1-5-ftp-transfer.html
And when you have configured all that, your HDR should be ready to go.

Note to mods or Admin: maybe a sticky should be set for this info as the question keeps arising.
