Giving serious consideration to changing my Windows 7 based HTPC to mythbuntu. Does anyone here have experience of it? Any advice or pointers? Should I embrace it or steer well clear?

No personal experience with it but you could look at these as a reference:

I'm running mythtv on a debian system, took a while to figure out thesetup, but that was two years ago. If you use Linux and can Google you'll have all the tools you need to set it up as you like it.
It's continuously improving so I don't know what it's like out of the box now.
Day to day use of it is no problem, used to use a remote but now use an app on my android phone. Epg works fine off the internet and you can get addon for browsing, burning, photogallery, security cameras etc. Besides, close down the frontend and you have a full desktop environment. A little bit more tinkering and I can now remotely schedule start recordings via a webbased interface from my phone.
See if there's a live (bootable) CD so you can see what it like like without modifying your current setup.
    Any specific Q's just ask.

I had mythbuntu running for about a year, but ended up ditching it for tvheadend/xbmc.

I found the web management interface for tvheadend easier to deal with. I have separate front and back end.

HTPC is silent Atom/ION/SSD box running Openelec
Backend is HP Server with Sat card, DVB-T USB stick and Raid NAS.

I all works well but I tend to destabilise it every so often upgrading stuff looking for new features :D Still waiting for timeshifting

Exactly why I moved to mediaportal years ago!

I used to use mythbuntu, but gave up on mythtv as a frontend because it's just not pretty enough for me I also found setting it up wasn't very intuitive and I had to do a lot of reading to get things working at all. The distro was nice and light with just enough to use it as a desktop if required but nothing in there that took up too much in the way of resources.

In terms of performance I found it great, but if you're going down the myth road I'd recommend going with xbmc as a frontend with mythtv as a backend. The new release of xbmc (frodo) has recently gone into the first beta and it comes with PVR support by default allowing you to connect into whatever backend takes your preference.
