2000 Rover 25 screeching when cold and stationary

I've recently bought a 2000 Rover 25 1.8 petrol auto. It's a bit tatty but tested 'til April and only 56k miles. It'll do me until then anyway. I hope!

A couple of issues I've noticed, one is that it sounds really deep and loud - like a diesel engine more than a petrol - and I think it's a bit odd.

The other thing is, it has this screeching / squeaking sound (really quite loud) when it's cold and either stationary or in (I think, because it's an auto) first gear. By the time I'm in (probably) about 2nd gear the noise appears to go away. The noise sounds like it's coming from the driver's side wheel type of area.

    Any ideas much appreciated.

Screech is more than likely a slack belt, alternator or power steering. Engine might have been neglected if its noisy, run it on 10 40 semi syn diesel engine oil for 2k miles might work a treat, won't do any harm anyway.
