While looking for a pdf copy of Drivers Licence D.401 form online(I now know you can’t download it) I discovered that apparently there will be new EU style credit card drivers licences issued from January

Mine is up at the end of November, so here is my query /question

Given government bureaucracy do you reckon it will actually happen ??

I might just get the current type one for a year (it can be done for € 5) and get the new one next year

If I’m really fussy could I change my then 3 month (of itsone year term) old style licence for a credit card sized one in February ??

    Thanks for that

Just got back from garda station with the form. You are spot on. I guess its best to properly read these things and not just sketch over web sites when looking for information and then posting on boards !!!

I know it no big deal but its gonna niggle me knowing that I missed out on the credit card type licence by 7 weeks and i'm going to have the old type one for the next 10 years !!

"hello tax office worker. i would like to update my license information for the address please."

having 2 cars myself I never remember to take my license from the civic. would be nice to have a card license to carry in the wallet without damaging it .

mind you if I get stopped I do have photo I.d in the wallet to cover identity and then produce in 10 days thing.

Chats probably the easiest thing to do. I havent updated my address since I got it (despite trying on numerous occasions!)

I know, it's pretty crap alright. There was talk at the start of the year, of charging a fee to "upgrade" your existing paper licence to the credit card style. There's no sign of that anymore, but I would imagine they might introduce late next year once the system is on it's feet. And hopefully you might even be able to lose your licence by then to :p.

Not the smartest plan, needs forms filled in to explain how the license was lost and a Garda witness of your signiature, not to mention it costs mone.

Much smarter plan, less form filling, costs nothing.

This suggests it won't be ready until September 2013:

Why can you not download it?

Because it has a signature sticker label on it for sticking in the licence.

    Allright.
So you can download it, and you can print it, but you can't use it for it's purpose then.

I didn't really understood why someone wouldn't be able to download pdf file which can be viewed.

I predict some unforeseen delay arising between now and January.

What would happen if you "forgot" your licence was up in November and only "copped it" next year when the new system is launched, is there any problems with this approach. I know you used to have ten years to renew an expired Licence, not sure of the insurance implication though, my policy specifies "currently holds or has in the past held such a licence" don't know about other policies?

I'm pretty sure you could be done for driving without a valid licence by the Gardaí

Which is a very minor offence. No insurance issues however.

Are you sure it's very minor offence?
If licence is not renewed, it's not driving without carrying a document, but it's actually driving without licence.

F.e. someone licence renewal might be subject to providing eyesight report or medical certificate.
Are you saying that someone who doesn't renew it (f.e. because he is not healthy enough to drive) commits only a minor offence?

The difference would be where there was a genuine oversight as opposed to not being eligible. The later would cause severe problems.

True, but it cannot be decided on the side of the road.

In case someone mentioned above that he would wait for few months up to 19th January to get a new licence and drive in the mean time without renewing it.
Say licence renewal is subject to eyesight report.
What in case he wasn't aware that his eyesight is not right.
If he did go to do it, he would find out he have to change his glasses, but because he didn't renew it, he didn't even know about it.

    What in this case?

I'm of the opinion that driving with expired licence should be the same kind of offence as driving without licence at all.

The insurance companies seem content to cover people with expired licences so long as they are not disqualified. Now I would expect the <expletive deleted> to jump at the chance to deny a payout but they don't in these cases.

I know it's only once every 10 years but from the linked article you'd have to go to an SGS office to have your mugshot taken. I'm sure there won't be one of them in every town.

They are going towards the standard system in the USA and Europe where you have to attend a government office for your photo. I don't see a problem with this approach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,936 ✭✭✭CrowdedHouse

Ok but a stamp is much cheaper than 5 litres of diesel and a couple of hours of my time !

Costs a fair bit if you have to move to change your address.

How many people have their current address on their licence?

    I got a 3 year licence today

I didnt really get into it with the lady behind the counter but I got the impression all the details of the new scheme have not been fully finalised

There 'should' be a way of changing to the new type, but she had no definate information on it

I will be shocked if it comes to pass in January.

Will the normal / typical photo be ok on the application ?

Yes, for now. From September, you'll have to go to one of the Government-approved booths.

Are there new forms in use or are the old forms still valid?

I needs to replace my lost licence on Monday.

You have to download the new forms. Someone posted a link earlier - I'll try to find it.

are they not available to pick up in a garda station or tax office ?

since these are starting this week / next week im going to apply for one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

They should be, but of course nobody knows for certain. I do know the form's available for download though. Surely, that's easier than going down to the Gards or the tax office?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 473 ✭✭ThreeLineWhip

None of the old forms were ever available to download due to the signature strip sticker.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

You can digitally capture signatures now...

If i apply for the new licence looking for a change of address will i get the new type even though my old licence is not due to expire until next year?

I'm in the same situation as yourself. Had a read of the online form & it lists 'change of address' as one of the situations acceptable for applying, if i'm reading it correctly you don't need to have the form stamped & signed by garda if returning old license

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 367 ✭✭Diairist

Be advised that if Co Clare sent you a renewal form for completion it's probably the out of date one. Also the (right) form, which has an insert, not 4 pages on one sheet, needs to be completed in black.

If you go to the desk you will (probably) be dealt with very efficiently & professionally and you will get a receipt which you can hand to a Garda if you're stopped. I was afraid of simply posting it in because if I was stopped it might sound a bit dodgy to say "I don't have a licence but I posted it in and they might take a while to send me the new one..."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,964 ✭✭✭Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime

im waiting til next week to send it in. or waiting to "lose" my licesne.

if anyone has successfully changed address for free and got a new format licence id be interested to know. incase I have to lose mine or something.

SGS is the name of the company awarded the contract for ripping you off processing the photographs.

And nobody knows where the offices will be as yet.

Thats the same company that originally had the NCT contract isn't it?
They lost out to Applus in the last bid.
Shower of wasters but seeing as they keep getting juicy govt contracts they must know something about tendering...;)

Yup, they also did driving tests, not sure if they still do.

Time marches on. I got my credit card style drivers licence today

Can’t complain - no q at the application centre and it arrived in the post a week later.

I can’t remember how I managed to get a 3 year licence the last time (no medical or age reason like applying for one today) It’s good to have a more modern style one eventually.

I assume most people used to keep the old paper one in the glove box or sun visor

What do you do with your credit card style one – in the car or in your wallet??
