Is this the only temp fix to get him home or is there something better he could do?
Is this the safe mode thing I hear mentioned for modern engines?

The warning light could be for anything really, he really needs to get the car checked, he could potentially be damaging the engine by continuing to drive it. Does he know of a local garage or have AA cover/breakdown assistance under his insurance?
