Sci-Fi soc room

The UT article had an undertone running through it suggesting that the removal of sci-fi soc from the House 6 room was the result of politicking and certain individuals wanting to aid a society they identified with.

Anyone have any more info on what's going on?

Hi,I'm the Games Officer of Sci Fi,and that was actually a mistake I believe. The society they mentioned was Q-Soc, which we dont actually think have anything to do with it. The mistake could have simply been because of a joke or mishearing it. Whilst the rest of the article is accurate, that part is off.
Long story short, with no warning the CSC are trying to evict Sci Fi from their room, even though the room is constantly in use and available to students. Their solution is to move Sci Fi to a smaller room, which is already full from Gamers. They are completely ignoring the fact that Sci Fi would HAVE to lose at least 50% of its equipment/books/games/movies/furniture, and Gamers would have to lose a load as well (not sure the exact extent as not my society). On top of that there can be up to 50 people in the room at once in Sci Fi, most often between 20-40. Gamers say their room is most often full as well (again, not my society,so not my place to confirm). The room we are moving into has maximum capacity of 30, and that is incredibly uncomfortable.
It is an atrocious decision, and one we intend to fight all the way

Any idea whom they have in mind to replace Sci-Fi with in the room? It's a pretty high profile society room, I don't think they would have kicked you guys out so precipitously without having some society in mind.

The refusal to post the minutes is laughable btw.

I would love to call it laughable, but it's far too serious to laugh from our point of view. We could be facing losing up to €20,000+ worth of books/games/movie/equipment/furniture, and that is hard to laugh at. The worst part is how they have treated us, as you said,no minutes to show how things went!!

Sci-Fi are one example of a society who make excellent use of their room, this is a loss for students.

It's alright guys. Once the general media learns that the disability services in trinity college actually suggest that people with disabilities join gamers because it offers a relaxed attitude and a quiet space to chill and play games and that the CSC executives are putting SFsoc, which is one of the loudest and busiest societies, in with them they will have to rethink the decision. Otherwise it would be a huge PR blow to trinity and I'd say the provost and other high ranking officials in trinity will step forward to repeal the decision.

You can just imagine the headlines if RTE or the papers found out that trinity was directly negatively affecting people with disabilities.

This is such a massively unpopular idea, be interesting to see if they'll actually go through with it

I have to say, assuming the aim of the CSC is to use the space more effectively and accomadate more societies, this more or less the worst way to go about it- heavy-handed, sudden, and with no consultation of either society.

More or less any other solution works out better for all, because if this goes ahead it will effectively kill both societies.

Has there been any more development on this? Have Sci Fi moved out?

Why not ballot the entire campus - we'll all join for a minimal fee, say 20c. Surely membership levels count for something. Its been done before for far bigger stuff than this in the real world.

Minimum fee mandated for any society is €1.

UT twitter: "Doyle says CSC not obliged per se to accommodate for students with autism as per disab service concern as not a College service"

    Charming.

Sci-fi packing up their stuff now. Shame

As a former member of both socs...
I have no idea who could think this is a good, let alone workable idea.
Sad day for both socs and the student body in general.
What's going to go into House6?

Exactly why have the sci fi soc been moved out? If anyone has any links to anything it'd be cool. From what I've garnered seems like a quite a stupid decision for the csc to make.

Copying something that I have written elsewhere:

Gamers is one of the few refuges in college for those who need a quiet environment but still desire social interaction. Social isolation is a huge problem for these students (and is a problem that can affect every student regardless).

I don't think the CSC should cater to their every need as a minority but having ONE respected, safe space for them is necessary above the marginally increased comfort and convenience of a larger number of students. Social isolation can lead to withdrawing from college, mental health problems, suicidal ideation, etc, and these students are more susceptible in the first place.

I don't think, purely hypothetically speaking, Qsoc having a cramped society room would lead anyone to withdraw from college, whereas the loss of the sole space for social interaction for students having difficulty with college already could. It will at the least have a bigger impact on them than anyone else.

Maybe moving SciFi isn't inherently a bad idea, or moving other students in with them isn't a bad idea, but Scifi and Gamers really should not be mixed.

Qsoc is/was lgbt? Didn't they have a room in House6 already? Chap in the pub tonight said they weren't moving in to SciFi's room...

Trying to shoehorn all that active room use and massive collections of stuff into the room in goldsmith is madness.

Back in the 90s gamers had a room in House 4, they got moved twice before ending up in that tunnel...

I really hope neither needs to throw any of their stuff away.

CSC are, and have been for a time, a pack of self serving hacks.....

Seriously, its the same societies that have reps on it most years, with obvious connections and bias towards their previous societies.

Its hard for the committees of smaller/some medium sized societies to do things with the CSC committee in the way. CSC does some great things, mainly grants :) and the staff (Lucy/Emma) are excellent, but the committee always come across as self serving etc
