Need a recommendation

So, I've got a 00 Jaguar S-Type, and can't really shift it (poor service history but driving fine, haven't really tried to shift it to be honest). Reckon it would get about €1,000 or so. No NCT on it, so really not sure - it's a 3-litre petrol.

I walk to work every day, and would really only need a car at weekends, so it's not worth taxing the Jag to get it back on the road.

I'd like to buy a classic, or a decent car (budget about €3k) that wouldn't cost the earth to tax, as it would only get about 2,000 miles a year.

    Any suggestions, boardsies?

What would be the most you would be willing to spend on tax for the year?

    €500-€600 I suppose.

It really depends on what type of car you want:

    1) Something reliable? Get a 2003 Corolla 1.4
    2) Something fun? Get a 2001 Mazda MX5 1.6/1.8 (also reliable)
    3) Need rear doors?
    4) Big boot? Get an Octavia
    etc... all very different cars....

Basically just give us a bit more info to go on please. So far we only really have a max engine size of about 1.8 but don't know any other limitations.

Is insurance a major factor? I'm guessing not with a 3.0 V6 jag but thought I had better ask anyway.

A classic would be nice... something different, but buy the wrong one and it will break your heart. Also be prepared to spend a bit on maintaining it properly if you want it to last.

Single, no kids, no dog, urban dweller, so that might narrow it a bit.

Like to go for drives in the countryside.

Would lump for a classic if it was reliable. Insurance not an issue.

An MX5 would be the first car that springs to mind. They're reliable, reasonably quick if you get a 1.8, and they're a good drivers car. You could get anything from an '89 mk1 to a 2002 mk2.5 for that kind of money.

The Mx5 is a lovely car, the 2002 model that is. Now we're talking!

Any other recommendations along the sub-2 litre, naughties car within a budget of 3k?

I'd rather spend the money taxing the jag, and drive something with a bit of street cred than any poxy MX5.

    Just sayin. ;)
