Fireplace cover and chimney damper

    Hi All,

We have two antique fireplaces in an old house where there are no room vents. We want to reduce the draw of the chimneys when our central heating is on.

We've seen a chimney damper product and also an acrylic box made to fit over the fireplace but not of the correct size.

We don't want to put up balloons as we want to be able to vent the rooms through the fireplaces during the day rather than open windows (security etc).

Has anyone experience of the chimney damper (Chimney Draught Stop) or a fireplace cover (the acrylic box is available in the UK) or any other ideas available in Ireland. We had heard that a company in Waterford made fireplace covers but could not get any details.

We like the idea of not fitting anything inside the chimney.

    All info gratefully accepted. smile.png

Can you post a pic of the fireplaces?
Is it possible to just use a solid heat shield?

A cheap and cheerful way that I have used in the past is to tape over the opening a sheet of black HDPE membrane (the stuff used under concrete) with duct tape but leave a few inches of the top un taped. Normally the natural draw of the chimney held the top flap in place unless it was deliberately folded down, thus allowing a degree of ventilation when required. Such a set up is not very decorative of course, so I simply placed a fire screen in front of it to hide it.

    My Solution:

    1x Plastic Bag.
    1x Can of Expanding Foam

    1. Put Nozel of Foam can in Bag and tape closed with air removed.
    2. Stick up flue
    3. Pull Trigger but not too much
    4. Leave Set
    5. Remove and trip so ends are flat
    6. Drill or cut vent hole in centre.
    7. Piece of rope through new vent hole fixed far side.
    8. Put back in flue / Pull out when not needed.

    Simples, Cost 8 Euro.
