It's absolutely beautiful. Have never seen it before. Where did it come from?

What kind of info are you looking for?

God is angered by sideways images out of focus.

My mum picked it up years back probably at a car boot sale or second hand shop and it has been on her wall ever since and nobody noticed it,recently everyone has started to complement it as if it was just new!
So now she would like to know what the name of the picture was (eg:our lady of sorrow, our lady of Guadalupe etc).
Or who did it,we spent hours on google looking for it but no luck yet!

Could you get a better full picture of it? There is probably a clue in the greek letters, but you'd need someone who has more than a smidgen of Greek!

I'm not certain, but it may perhaps be Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

There's an example of an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help if you follow this link, and the iconography of the image is explained. You will see a lot of similarities with the image supplied by the OP.

I googled Mary and Child Icon and an image of a Russian icon came up which looks like yours is based on. The icon for sale in the link is also a reproduction.

I could be completely wrong but looking at Mary's hand I think it's 20th century. However if it is Russian that would make it very interesting. I could be absolutely wrong in my guesses. If you want to post up more shots of both sides I'll do more highly professional googling.

I think Doc is right, your one most resembles the first one in his link.
Best I could find was this;http://www.corbisimages.com/stock-photo/rights-managed/42-20244005/virgin-and-child-icon-at-aghiou-pavlou
AFAIK in Icons the scroll the child holds symbolizes His Jewish ancestry.

The closest I can come is "Mother Soothe my Sorrows but the lettering is different.

    Good man.
It seems to be a variant of this icon then.

I'm going to need further evidence!

It's a direct copy of this one:

Edit: sorry i missed tommy2bads post, I think he got it.
