I came across this today. It's a portable Gas Detector for Hydrogen Sulphide, the dangerous gas in the slatted sheds. It has an audio and visual alarm, fully servicable and reusable. It clips on your belt by the looks of it. Might be of interest to someone.

    ToxiPro from Sperian
    Model - 1018110
    Price - 197.50 Euro

These are stocked by TED in Dublin, ph 01-450 5811

Now, hydrogen suphide is the deadly one, but there are others like ammonia, methane and carbon dioxide, which are just as deadly. This detector will only pick up the hydrogen sulphide, as far as I know. There may be another one that will pick up all gases.

I like the idea but there are some points to remember.
As a previous poster said there are other gases to be aware of. Toxic monitors don't come as a one unit to detect everything bad, some are for a specific gas and some are for families of similar gasses.
Also to be relied on they would need to be tested and certified regularly, we used to have them certified annually. Nothing as dangerous as relying on a bogus fail safe device.

So, I think there is merit in detection systems but for a system to be 100% effective it would be neither simple nor cheap. Anything less than 100% gives false sence of protection and is more dangerous than no system

i'd say an oxygen meter would be better, if the oxygen reading is too low due to presence of other gases then it will go off. This is what we use in the pharma industry.
