    I bought an 2004 avensis d4d on Saturday .
While driving down the m50 and the cheak engine light came on .
I stuck it on the computer and the erg valve seems to be at fault .
I took it off cleaned it and cleared the code a few hours later the light came back on !
I got another valve in a breakers yard
Cleared the fault code and a few hours later the lights back on again ???
Hope it's not the the pipe at the back of the engine blocked
The ports leading into it seem fine .

Has anyone had this happen ?

What is the exact fault code you are seeing?

    Ill have to cheak again
It was something to do with exhaust gas recycling system

    It's p0400
    Exhaust gas recirculating flow .

Could be a wiring fault between the ECU and solenoid or the solenoid itself.
The vaccum hoses that open the the valve itself could be worth a look.

Yes I'm thinking either a blocked breather pipe or the original solenoid might have shorted something .
There's no vacum pipe on the avensis it's all electric .
But saying that I've cleared the code and given it a good hard drive on the motorway and the light has stayed off 2 days now

    Update
Put a brand new egr valve on it
Light came back on in a few days
The only solution now is to remove the inlet manifold and check it for carbon buildup

    Right for anyone who's interested
    I got it fixed
The inlet manifold was blocked up with carbon .
Cleaned it out with carb cleaner and steam hosed it .
Refitted it and alls fine .

Nasty stuff. I get around to doing my manifold someday. Can you blank the EGR on them?

I looked it up and it's not recommended
It will put on the cheak engine light and economy will go down .
Here's some of what I took out of it

Is it a big job as the pipe is in a hard to reach area.

    Cheers.

It's at the front of the engine
The only fiddley thing is you have to remove the injector pipes and separate the air intake body from the manifold
Takes about an hour to remove
An hour to give a good cleaning
And an hour to refit .
