Can anyone on this forum provide me with the correct Irish spelling for the boys name "Rian"? Is there supposed to be a fada on the i or is it supposed to be "Riain" with a fada on the i? Or otherwise? He is going to be sent to a Gaelscoil so I would want to be getting it spot on.

'Rian' is correct. You will find some people putting a fada on it (Rían), but it's not necessary, as the 'ee' sound (as in 'meek') is provided sufficiently by the 'ia' vowel combination in the word itself. Some people seem to think that they need a síneadh fada to provide that same 'ee' sound, but it's already provided for in the spelling. Anyone that insists that it needs a síneadh fada is full of it.

It would be 'Riain' in certain grammatical contexts, such as possession being indicated (Rian's house - teach Riain), but the basic spelling of the name is just 'Rian' and is the one that would be most used, especially when simply writing the person's name for identification purposes.
