Query about speed camera vans, and where they are

The Gardai have a site of where they the speed cameras at; http://www.garda.ie/Controller.aspx?Page=6497

But there are a number of places where I've seen the speed camera between the M4/N4 merge section, and Liffey Valley. I'm aware that having the lines on the site gets them out of the "having to place signs to notify people" of the speed camera van ahead, but what about the vans that are parked in a few usual spots that are not marked on the above Gardai.ie map?

They can be placed anywhere they like. Only Gosafe have to stick to their assigned areas.

Does the GoSafe ones and the normal ones look any different?

    It's one of the GoSafe vans;

    1290064071.jpg

    are usually at the following locations;

    http://goo.gl/maps/9jpvQ
http://goo.gl/maps/MmXST (from the other side, as there were road works when the Google car was at the correct side)
http://goo.gl/maps/M503w (as above, the pictures are newer from the other side)

    None of this section of road is on the Garda website, of course;

The red lines are my addition of where the vans are sometimes parked.

Garda speed cams can go wherever they want. Look at the motorway sure.

Garda speed vans let out a flash which you can see when driving up to it. Like a camera flash.

The new gosafe vans use infra red light where you see no flash and are at the new cam locations near the signs.

Gosafe vans can also pick up three or four cars over the speed limit travelling close to each other.
The Garda speed cams cant as they have to flash and could cause an accident if having to do it four times in a row

Is the infrared flash completely invisible for human eye?

I realise if it was purely infrared it must be invisible, but I remember I was flashed once in Germany and I saw a small red flash. So there must have been some IR + a bit of visible red. Is this the same case in Ireland, or is it 100% invisible range?

If it's 100% invisible, you can still check if you were flashed on dashcam (if you have one), as any camera would record infrared waves ;)

Many fixed cameras have a magenta filter over a white flash.

I think I was flashed by one of these vans yesterday on the approach to Dublin/Liffey valley on the N4 (STUPID place for an 80km limit)

Anyways, I have a query ref this.

I was prob doing 90-100kmh, no argument there, however, this is where things get complicated.

I was driving a hire vehichle, (hired from a Dublin company) leased by the company I work for, (based in Derry)

My license is a northern one.

Should I expect to see the fine? If so, do I have any comeback?)

Unmarked transit btw (dunno if Garda or private)

Expect your boss / fleet manager to be having a word with you, as otherwise it will end up in their name.

Well that's what I was wondering.

I.expect the hire company to get the letter, i expect them to inform them the vehicle was on lease to a company based in the north.

I'm wondering will they pursue it then though?

If they have a nordie address it is very unlikely as they would be unable to summons.

    Hired or leased?

If it's hired then surely the rental company you picked it up from have your name and contact details as the driver. If it's leased, you can be sure the leasing company have your details as the driver.

I work in leasing and when we get a speeding fine in, we call the driver to see if it was them driving at the time, and if they 'fess up then we put in the address details they give and post the fine back to the Gardai to re-issue. Whether they re-issue to address's outside of the Republic, I don't know as once we've posted it back to the Gardai it's out of our name and not our problem.

    Yeah its leased.

I do live down here, employee of a northern company, I'm from the north, as is my license. I.e, my address on the license is a county Derry one.

You'll probably have pay the fine but the points can't be issued to your UK licence.

The leasing company will get the fine, and either ring you or your employers to find out who was driving the vehicle and then have the fine reissued.

As ROR said, the Gardai may or may not re send it.

why would you think you have any comeback? if they find you, just pay up

No, my query isn't on whether I'll avoid/dodge it.
I'm wondering if they'll chase me down given my license/address is a northern one.

I'll be giving the address on my license, if fine arrives at my folks address, I'll pay it.

If you were speeding, the hire company will get the fine. Who will in turn pass it on to the person / company who hired it (i.e. The company in Derry) They'll then (most likely) pass the fine / points letter on to you. As your on a foreign license, you'll have to pay the fine and won't get the points. Same as if you were caught by the Gardai on the side of the road

Of course, all that is dependant on the hire company sending on the fine in the first place. Will probably take a few months to reach you.

    No - that's not correct.

The original fine/letter will not be sent on anywhere. As the fine is in the name of the lease company, they will want to get it out of their name as quickly as possible.

Lease company probably have the driver's details and will call him directly, but if they don't then they'll contact the fleet manager to get the driver's details, to check with him if he was driving at the time. Once it's established who was driving, then the drivers details are filled in on the back of the fine and that's posted back to the Gardai.

Hi! Can any1 plz tell me the exact intentions of what this sign means? I know it is 2 do with speed cameras! What does it mean there is a speed camera up ahead! Thank you! Sorry I couldn't get a picture! It's a black camera on a sign

It's simply a black camera on a small square sign

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Oh, wherever you see that sign it means that there is a possibility that speed van man is ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 FBJH

Thanks! Because my friend was just over the speed limit the other day and she was afraid that a speed camera was there. I just wanted 2 find out 4 her! That's brilliant.. At least she can stop being worried about it now. You are 100% sure that is correct???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Did she see a white van at the side of the road when she was over the speedlimit. A van with stripes all over it, similar to the ones above, hard to miss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 FBJH

No there was no vans about anywere after it! But it defenetly doesn't mean there was a speed camera there! That sign just means there might be a speed van ahead!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Yes, there is no camera AT the sign. All the sign tells you is that this van could be ahead (the camera is in the van), nowhere else. Relax, it'll be grand. Stay at or slightly under the speed limit next time ;)

Ok fantastic. I think she knows not 2 do it again it's all she has been thinking about! Haha! It's exactly the same sign as the 1 on the back of that van. Thanks very much 😃

what think ye of this ?

The van is parked outside the area signposted as being monitored. Are they allowed to do that ? Are they bound to operate only within posted areas ?

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The signs don't necessarily indicate the start and finish point of a zone. They can be placed along the zone and at junctions during the zone. Either way, your talking 10 ft there. Consult the map on the Garda website but I'd imagine 'Your honor, he was 10ft outside the zone' would be any form of defense.
